Thanks (at least according to legend) to Pete Shelley of The Buzzcocks; they were called Stiff Kittens. The name may well have been more punk than Joy Division; but can any of us really imagine a band called Stuff Kittens singing Love Will Tear Us Apart or Transmission? It is well known that Warsaw was the name used prior to the change to Joy Division;
