Built by the John Livingstone Miller Co. of Tynemouth and opened in 1898, the lighthouse was built on the remains of a late eleventh century monastery and replaced the four hundred year old lighthouse at Tynemouth Point. 645 blocks of stone and 750,000 bricks were used in the construction of this landmark that stands an impressive 120 feet tall.
