Mulberry Bush
A spreading tree with heart-shaped, glossy green leaves and white mulberries which ripen to pink and red in late summer. Unlike the black mulberry, this tree will produce fruit fairly quickly though the crop is much lighter but the fruit has a strong flavour and a deeper colour. Both the white and black mulberry are trouble-free trees that have been grown in Britain for hundreds of years. They can tolerate a wide range soils provided they are well-drained. They do need to be in a sunny, sheltered spot.Position: full sunSoil: moist, well-drained soilRate of growth: slow-growingFlowering period: May to JuneFlower colour: inconspicuous pale greenOther features: pink and red raspberry-like fruit (August to September)Hardiness: fully hardyGarden care: Prepare the ground well before planting. Plant in full sun out of cold, drying winds. Stake for the first few years and prune in winter, as the trees `bleed` at other times of the year. Little pruning is needed, only to remove low, dead, diseased or crossin
