Acne Treatments Buyers Guide
Acne treatments such as gels and creams are familiar products found in almost any family bathroom that is frequented by a teenager. However, acne is not a condition that solely affects teenagers, with many adults also investing in a range of treatment products. Ultimately, it is important for buyers to note the varying characteristics of such products because different solutions are required for specific types of skin, acne and other related factors. Indeed, in more extreme cases various hormone or antibacterial treatments must be sought from a doctor.
Nevertheless, the vast range of acne treatment products available on the market will suffice for the majority of consumers. Popular brand name acne treatment products include Murad, Pharmagel and Thermaclear, whilst many high street stores and pharmacies will offer their own solutions. Essentially, many of these products will provide apparently similar treatment, so it is important to understand what might work best for your particular needs. For instance, skin types vary in that some are dry, in which case an acne cream would be used to moisturise the skin, or greasy, in which case a gel product would be more effective.
You should always look out for the active ingredient of an acne treatment product, which will be benzoyl peroxide in most off-the-shelf solutions or retinoids such as isotretinoin and tretinoin. However, these active ingredients vary considerably and each targets a specific area of acne treatment, although benzoyl peroxide is especially useful in so far as it can kill bacteria, unblock pores and reduce the oiliness of skin. Retinoids, however, typically only help reduce acne by unblocking skin pores.
Other acne treatments may serve to cleanse the skin in a more general way, as with exfoliating scrubs and washes that remove dirt and bacteria by stripping away a surface layer of dead skin. However, exfoliating acne treatments will be less effective if they do not contain active ingredients such as benzoyl peroxide because they will be unhelpful in killing bacteria if this is the underlying cause of the acne.
Furthermore, although certain acne treatments claim to provide rapid success, you should adopt a realistic approach. Indeed, it can take several months of continuous treatment for a particular solution to work, so it is usually necessary to try products over extended periods of time.
