Can a beautiful and internationally famous American actress find happiness with a frumpy British bookstore clerk? She can -- at least for a while, it seems -- in Notting Hill. William Thacker (played by Hugh Grant) is a bookseller at a shop in the Notting Hill district in West London, who shares a house with an eccentric Welsh friend, Spike (Rhys Ifans). One day, William is minding the store when in strolls Anna Scott (Julia Roberts), a lovely and well-known actress from the United States who is in London working on a film. She buys a book from William, and she is polite and charming in the way a famous actress would be with a star-struck sales clerk. Their relationship would logically end there, if William didn't run out a few minutes later to buy some juice. While dashing back to the shop, he bumps into Anna on the street, spilling juice all over her blouse. Since he lives nearby, William politely offers to let her stop by his house to clean up; since William seems harmless enough, Anna agrees. When Anna has to stop back to pick up a bag she left at William's house, they kiss -- just in time for Spike to show up. A romance slowly blooms as his friends and family (not to mention the world at large) wonder out loud what he's doing dating a movie star. william thacker vive a londra nel quartiere notting hill, in una casa che divide con spike, un giovane sfaccendato che si muove bene nel disordine e nella confusione. william e' proprietario di una libreria specializzata in libri di viaggio, dove un giorno capita anna scott, diva del cinema americano, a londra per promuovere il suo ultimo film. dopo un primo impatto, i due si rivedono poco dopo e avvertono il bisogno di ripetere i loro incontri. amore a prima vista, complicato pero' dalle loro opposte situazioni. per evitare difficolta' alla carriera dell'attrice, la coppia si vede di nascosto e di fretta. solo in una occasione, william invita anna ad una cena di compleanno della sorella. qui la grande diva si confonde a tavola con i suoi ammiratori quasi increduli. poco dopo pero' arriva in citta' il fidanzato di lei, e la storia sembra dover finire. passano altri mesi. anna entra all'improvviso in libreria: e' tornata a londra, sola dopo aver lasciato il fidanzato. passano la notte a casa di lui, ma la stampa e' in agguato e rende pubblica la notizia. nuova interruzione del rapporto. tempo dopo, anna si ripresenta e si 'dichiara' a william. il libraio esita ma infine dice di no. per poco pero', perche', spinto dagli amici, si presenta alla conferenza stampa di anna e risponde in diretta dichiarandosi a sua volta innamorato. i due finalmente possono sposarsi. lui affronta in secondo piano lo star-system. lei gli siede accanto sulla panchina nel parco con i bambini intorno.
