Audio & Video Cables Buyers Guide
Most components of audio and home entertainment come equipped with audio/video cables, simply because they are required to connect everything together and their inclusion allows a system to be up and running in no time at all. There may, however, be some performance benefits to be derived from replacing these standard cables with more sophisticated alternatives.
Audio & video cables can, of course, be analogue or digital. Analogue audio cables are characterised by colour-coded, coaxial RCA, or BNC, connectors, one for the left channel and one for the right. Analogue video cables typically feature the same connectors, but it is important to note that the two connectors be interchanged, even if this is the case. A conductor made from OFC, or "Oxygen Free Copper", coated with silver, is used in high quality audio cables to preserve the signal and improve connectivity. Quality video cables similarly employ a metal foil shield and gold plated connectors to preserve the strength and accuracy of the signal.
Digital audio/video cables are available in the form of coaxial, or optical, cables – also known as iLink, or TOSLINK cables – and DVI, or "Digital Video Interface", cables, but for more recent devices these technologies have effectively been superseded by a new standard, known as HDMI, or "High Definition Multimedia Interface". HDMI has become the standard for digital audio/video cables in an HD home entertainment content, allowing uncompressed audio/video data to be transferred via a single cable. As such, new equipment, including HDTVs, DVD players, Blu-ray players, etc. features HDMI inputs and outputs.
