Battery Chargers Buyers Guide
Battery chargers obviously come in a range of shapes and sizes to match the variety of rechargeable batteries available. In fact, anything from the 12-volt lead-acid battery that powers your car to the 1.5-volt, AA, or AAA, rechargeable alkaline or Li-Ion ("Lithium Ion") batteries that power your digital camera, or camcorder, can benefit from battery chargers.
However, certain types of rechargeable battery, NiCad ("Nickel Cadmium") batteries, for example, need proper care and conditioning before use. Conditioning, in this sense, means fully charging and discharging batteries for a few cycles and advanced chargers allow this to be achieved with a minimum of fuss. Failure to discharge batteries fully can result in a so-called "memory effect," whereby a battery "remembers" the level to which it was discharged previously and cannot be discharged below that level on subsequent occasions.
Rechargeable batteries should never, repeat never, be charged for longer than recommended by the manufacturer; there is a serious risk of fire, or even explosion if they are. Some battery chargers therefore include a microprocessor, which detects when batteries are fully charged and automatically switches off the charger when they are. This is an extremely useful feature because it means that you can plug in your battery charger somewhere out of sight and effectively forget about it until you need to use the batteries again.
