Ask a Question About Anything:

what tools do I need to become a car mechanic?
If you are interested in being a mechanic - consult your nearest college with appropriate course... for home mechanics... buy a Haynes manual for your car as you will find this really helpful and a good start.   Agree or Disagree?

what set of tools should a car mechanic purchase?
A car mechanic is only as good as the selection of tools he has in his shop or van. Some jobs just cannot be done without the aid of a special bit of equipment, but as some of the specialist equipment on the market costs hundreds, if not thousands of pounds, the art of a good mechanic is to learn how to do the job with a select few tools at hand.
The basics of any mechanics garage are a decent set of spanners. Forged steel ones are the best, and should last the duration of your career as long as you treat them with a bit of respect and only use them for what they are designed for. You will need a double set for the regular sizes from 10mm to 19mm, and preferably with a ratchet ring end. This allows you to keep the spanner on the nut as you turn it, much like a socket. Have a look at these Spanner Sets to find a selection.
Secondly, is a decent set of ratchets and sockets. The three drives (Ό ” ½ ” Ύ”) are all essential, due to the larger the socket is the more torque is required, so the drive size increases. For the start out mechanic I wouldn’t suggest buying yourself a set of torque wrenches just yet as they are very expensive, and also quite specific to certain jobs, so get some capital under your belt and consider investing a bit later on. Here are some Socket Sets to have a look at.
If you are setting up your own workshop, or even a mobile workshop you will definitely be thankful for a compressor for running air tools. A compressor allows you to save so much time doing menial things such as undoing wheel nuts by hand and pumping up tyres. There are so many different air tools out there that you can buy in the future, but one I would suggest getting to start with is an impact gun. Take a look at this one for an example :

They are incredibly versatile tools that can be used in many applications, its incredible how the toughest bolts will magically undo with a little go with an impact wrench. Here is a list of Air Compressors and Air Wrenches for you to look at.
You will need a good quality trolley jack, at a minimum of 3ton capacity should be about right. Above that is great, allowing you to work on heavier equipment, but they do start to get a bit costly. To work underneath cars safely it is essential that you get yourself a set of axle stands. These are what is keeping 3 tons of heavy metal from landing on your head, so skimping on these is not a great idea. Have a look at these Axle Stands and Trolley Jacks to find these. Have a quick look at this video to show you how to position the jack as well:
Apart from these large items, you will find many smaller items are essential as well, such as Allen Keys and Torx Screws. These you can buy now or accumulate over time, but it is best to keep buying tools over your career as you can never have too many, only not enough!

how much are tools for a car mechanic?
Professional car mechanics tools are very expensive. Makes such as Snap-On and Britool are the best but costly. The average DIY mechanic can probably make do with lesser makes like draper.   Agree or Disagree?
