Some jobs just cannot be done without the aid of a special bit of equipment, but as some of the specialist equipment on the market costs hundreds, if not thousands of pounds, the art of a good mechanic is to learn how to do the job with a select few tools at hand. The basics of any mechanics garage are a decent set of spanners. Forged steel ones are the best, and should last the duration of your career as long as you treat them with a bit of respect and only use them for what they are designed for. You will need a double set for the regular sizes from 10mm to 19mm, and preferably with a ratchet ring end. This allows you to keep the spanner on the nut as you turn it, much like a socket.
