I would have to tell you to take a look at washburns. They, in my own opinion, have great sound on and off the amp. You should be able to find them pretty cheap, just shop around until you find your pick. What do you think?

Encore do a good range and of the Strats and Les Paul types I`ve played, the action and sound is comparable to the guitars they emulate. They are a good price too and represent good value. There are readily available on places like eBay What do you think?

how does iibanez acoustic guitars compare?
they are excellent, generally thinner so the sound is not as resonant, but genreally cheaper guitars. They are great guitars I recommend the AEL series, which is anywhere from 300-500 bucks. The AEL20E is excellent, and one of the best guitars under 500 dollars. What do you think?

Look for books about the trade of a Luthier, there are several available, such as Guitarmaking: Tradition and Technology: A Complete Reference for the Design & Construction of the Steel-String Folk Guitar & the Classical Guitar by Jonathon Natelson, you could probably pick this up for about £15 online.
