| Canon | MD205 | As my previous camcorder had packed up, I was looking for a replacement. I was wary of DVD or Hard Disk-based camcorders as I do a lot of computer-based video editing and from my research it seemed Mini DV still had a lot to offer on that front. And I was looking to save as much money as I could.
The Canon MD205 isnt the most complicated or highly specified video camera available - far from it. But then this also makes it very easy to use and perfectly capable of shooting video, which of course is its main purpose.
It has 16:9 widescreen, a good flip out LCD screen (which also doubles as a video light when turned around) and the image stabilises well. The controls are simple to use and the joystick is responsive. Image quality is nowhere near as good as more expensive models, but at this price point it is good for its type. Its a bit grainy when used indoors, although you can adjust the AE mode to compensate. There is IEEE1394 (Firewire) output to connect the camera to your PC.
The quick start feature is really useful if you are out and about as the camera goes from standby to ready to record in around a second at the press of a button. This still uses some power, but nowhere near as much as having the camera permanently on. Overall battery performance is pretty good with the included unit, I have managed just over an hour with the screen in use.
The zoom is generous, if a little quick for my liking, which can make the autofocus really grown under the strain. There is no still picture capture, but then this feature is hopeless on cheaper camcorders when it is included - compared to a proper stills camera - so Im happy to be without it.
The build quality is good, and the styling is pretty standard. There is a side-mounted tape drive and the lense cover is built-in, you just flick a switch to slide it over the lense. Much better than having a lense cap dangling from the camera. Its not particularly heavy but has enough bulk that its not particularly pocket-friendly.
If you are looking for a cheap, good quality camcorder with no frills but good video, the MD205 is perfect. It ticks all the basic boxes and is a pleasure to use. | | Amazon Reviewer | 20/01/2009 01:01:01 |

| SONY | HDRSR10 | I purchased this HD camcorder on New Years Eve and it arrived on 3rd January even though I chose the Super Saver Delivery option. Thumbs up for Amazon!
I tried it at home straight away and the picture quality was just amazing when I connected the camcorder to my full HD TV via the mini HDMI cable (Thanks to previous reviewers who reminded me to buy the cable beforehand). My friend was screaming when she saw that it actually showed the pores on her nose! Colour looked a bit dull when shooting indoors, but I reckon that is because of the poor lighting. The camcorder was so easy to use, and I didnt even need to read the manual. Everything was pretty straight forward on the touch screen menu.
The Zoom mic was one of the main reasons why I went for a SONY. For other makes, this will cost you extra money to buy the external mic. I tested it at home, with friends speaking at different distances away from the camcorder, and it did the job, although I would like to test it outdoor to see how it would absorb the sounds.
I spent 3 days deciding between a Canon, Panasonic and SONY and finally made up my mind on the SONY. Firstly, price is decent (it has gone up now for some reason). Secondly, SONY has always thrown in some functions that other brands dont have. It is said that Panasonic is better in terms of image quality. However, as a home user, I dont think we can really tell the minor difference these camcorders are going to make with human eyes. And after, price and ease of use are more of a concern for consumers.
In a word, I am very happy with my choice and hope whoever bought it has enjoyed it too.

| SONY | HDRSR10 | I love this camera. I got one in the States as I dont care about the NTSC output in standard def mode. The HD recordings in 1080 are brilliant. Three weeks in Florida can be enjoyed over and over again just like being there.
If you are feeling flush, buy the Sony VRD-MC5 dvd burner. Just connect the docking station to the burner, pop the camera on the dock stick a dvd-r into the MC5, press a button and hey presto; out comes a dvd that is recorder in blu ray format allowing full HD playback on your Blu ray player. No messing with PCs its just fantastic.
One other recommendation would be to buy a spare battery as you find yourself filming so much more!

| Sony | HDRTG3E | My first delve into non-tape recording. Always stuck by DV before as the quality is so good, but now editing software can cope well with non-tape data I decided to take the plunge. Even recording with standard definition I am delighted with the results. I get 60 mins worth of recording time on the supplied 4GB card which is generally ample (not for long trips, but then I usually take my laptop with me anyway) and transfer and viewing on the PC is so simple.
The camera itself is stunning and turns more than a few heads, and although small, it feels very solid. My one worry was that it would be too small and therefore make recording very shaky, but this isnt an issue at all (maybe something to do with the great Image Stabilisation that Sony use). Also, the 4.0 megapixel still camera produces decent enough images in good light - fine for snapshots if you have left your point and shoot at home.
One thing to correct from a previous review - you DONT need to take the dock with you to charge battery/transfer data. Both relevant cables can be plugged directly into the camera.
All in all a great bit of kit, and at under £400, a great deal too! | | Amazon Reviewer | 05/01/2009 01:01:01 |

| Sony | HDRTG3E | I read the reviews and looked at the product spec before buying and I am delighted to say that the Sony TG3 handycam does exactly what I want. I have never owned a camcorder before but am comfortable with gadgets. It took me about 5 minutes to become comfortable with all the main features and take some pretty good footage. I read about the fact that some DVD players dont like HD vidoes but soon found how to record in either SD or HD format.
The video editing software provided doesnt work with Vista and clashes with some disc burning software so I followed the advice on another review and have bought Power Director Ultra 7. This isnt a great loss becuase I have a feeling most people would want more than the software provided with the camera.
The product itself is compact, light, easy to use, intuitive and ideal if you have always wanted to have a camcorder without the hassle, weight and tonnes of tapes or discs. | | Amazon Reviewer | 04/01/2009 01:01:01 |

| Sony | DCRSR35 | Santa spoilt me this year and left the Sony Handycam DCR-SR35E under the tree and what a brilliant pressie it is!
The camera is INCREDIBLY easy to use - I was filming 5 seconds after opening the box!! The functions are all pretty standard, two that Ive tried so far worked particularly well; Spotlight mode and the Extended Mic (I was filming a pantomime from Row Y of a large theatre...picture and audio quality were fab).
Exporting the images/videos couldnt be easier, youve the option to transfer to either your PC/Laptop, a memory stick (via the Pro Duo) or directly to DVD.
The supplied software includes a browser which allows you to watch and edit your work as well as save in different formats.
Overall, I am a very satisfied customer! | | Amazon Reviewer | 04/01/2009 01:01:01 |

| Sony | HDRTG3E | This is just a great bit of kit ordered it on the 19th got it on the 20th i think the sony software is fine, and the picture is brilliant looks amazing on my 1080p samsung tv. The avchd can take a fair bit of time to burn but looks great on the blu-ray player. | Sanyo | VPCCA6 | I used to try to take pictures of snowboarding, skiing and motorsport friends, but the pictures never did the action justice, now I just video the action and extract stills of the video, I have had some amazing action pictures, I then put them on face book then friends drag them off for there own use, its so simple and easy. I bought a spare battery, and a pair of batterys are good enough for what I want to film in a day, the pictures are pretty good quality for pc screen but not so good for a large tv, I never take pictures with it as with a film you never miss the best bit, I have wiped out boarding many times with it in my pocket, dropped it in snow and still works fine.
its better than any photo camera for the purpose I need and am expecting many more quality pictures this year.
the downsides for me were, its a strange angle to point and film which took me a day to get used to and kept cutting peoples lower bodies off, also if you film for 10 minutes then start extracting stills towards the end, after each still the film goes back to the beginning so you have to fast foward through film to get to next still, can take a while to extract 10 sequence still, I just started recording shorter videos to assist the still recovery. | | Amazon Reviewer | 10/12/2008 01:01:01 |

| SONY | DCRHC30E | It is wonderful gadjet interms of Video Recording and still photo creating out of the vidoe. If you have a digital camera you can shot only the still snaps and when ever still phots are taken people will stand still and give pose for that with the ordinary smiling of tightlipped poses. But in this Gadget you can continuosly shoot the video and when you view the vidoe the rarest moments can be freezed using the tape still option and transfer that still to the memory stick due. The still photos transferred to the Memory stick duo can furhter be sharpened by zooming option there by a particular portion of the still picture is further enlarged. I really be proud of buying this wonderful gadget. | | Jayavelu | 14/01/2008 09:59:47 |

| SONY | DCRHC30E | I had never used a camcorder before but was amazed on how quick I managed to be able to pick it up and start using. Compact, can write to memory stick duo or tape and I have put in a 2gb stick so I get more than from a tape. Unfortunately it is only mono sound when using memory stick but for standard video recording, do you really need stereo sound? I think you actually get more battery life using the write to meory card as you are not using any motor to physically wind tape heads. A great, affordable, easy to operate machine that isnt the size of a house brick. | | Evrae | 28/06/2007 09:45:12 |

| JVC | GZMG142EK | Excellent camcorder. Great storage and really shows why minidv with it`s 1.5 hours and DVD with it`s 0.5 hours recording times are not the best options for those wanting to get a lot of footage without the expense of piles of media. Editing is easy, connecting to a PC to upload your video is a case of USB cable and go. Does direct to DVD burning if you wish, so non-techies can also use this without problems. If you are considering MiniDV or DVD then weigh up the pros and cons first. THIS camera will be suitable for most unless you have a particular need for the other 2 formats. Definitely the way forward of the 3 and at a great price too. | | Andy | 28/06/2007 09:45:04 |

| NISIS | DV6 | This product is phenomenal. It says 512mb restricted but I tried a 2gb high-speed SD card with it and it worked perfectly well!! I love it, the photo quality is phenomenal for something this price, and on a high-speed memory cards there is no delay in pressing the button and the photo being taken, and with a high-speed memory card the frame rate is a full 30fps!! Very very good. The battery on this lasts forever, it is practically a phone batter and so unless it`s being used very heavily, won`t need many charges. The only problem I have with it is the extremely quiet speaker and the fact that it changed MP3 files names to MP31, MP32 etc. Other than that, as a stills camera this is phenomanal, as a video camera it is great and as an MP3 player it is still effective. | | GABJAM | 25/06/2007 15:36:51 |

| Mustek | DV5300SE | I just bought this camcorder a few days ago and so far, so good. It eats through batteries like a starving boar (solved by using 3 rechargable 1.5v AAA batteries) but gets great picture quality with a webcam style intake. Don`t believe anything poeple say about poor quality indoors becuase the footage I`ve taken with it inside came out almost Hollywood quality (with no natural light, nonetheless). The DV5300SE uses an innovative SD card drive rather than those anceint `cassette tapes`. This digital camcorder can be seen as the Lambourghini of camaras with its sleek, silver casing. It feels very much like a toy but operates like a charm. If you are looking to make a proffesional grade film with a low budget: I highly recommend the Mustek DV5300SE. It is small, reliable, inexpensive, 5 Megapixel at 30fps and looks absolultely beautiful.
Pros: Portable, longevity, many modern features, inexpensive, unremarkably clear video, attractive, comes with accessories, SD card compatable, internal memory, music player, sound recorder, user-friendly interface, built-in photo flash. Cons: Battery `black hole`, addictive. | | Captian Andrew | 25/06/2007 15:36:46 |

| JVC | GZMG36 | An excellent camcorder, image is great, very easy to use, easy to upload onto your PC. I have not used the still picture function as I did not buy it for that so cannot comment, but the video part for which I bought the unit is fantastic. | Panasonic | NVGS27 | Hello Fellow Videographers, Today I am giving you a brief overview of the Panasonic NV-GS27. From what I have noticed, Panasonic has attempted to emulate the high quality camcorder experience, and they have done a superb job. The only 2 areas they fel short in was no mic input, and no real widescreen. (16:8) I also found the GS27 was FAR nicer and easier to hold and use then any other mini DV cam. I personally feel the design/shape is fantastic. The rounder design is also easies to keep steady. The picture quality was VERY crisp in good lighting. I was very pleasantly surprised by how nice it looked. I mean, we are talking a 1/6 single CCD camcorder. Too many people review items like this, and compare them to high price/quality camcorders. They forget that not all of us have that much cash to throw around on a ¼ 3CCD cam. I find manual settings to be a must for getting the most out of budget camcorders. You can get a much better picture from manual settings, and in the budget DV cameras there seems to be a better ability to manually set the iris, shutter, focus, etc with the GS27 then most other big name brands in the same price range. This is something I find VERY appealing. Now, this next bit plus for is that it is side loading, where most other budget camcorders are bottom loading. Bottom loading is a HUGE pain when you are using a tripod, and I use a tripod as much as I possibly can. In a lot of cases you will have to remove the camera from the tripod to replace the tape. This can get very frustrating, very quickly. So to summarise my final thoughts, The Panasonic was nicer to hold, slightly crisper in good lighting, better manual settings, and side loading. (tripod friendly) My personal opinion is that most big name mini DV cams will be fine for the beginner who just wants “family videos,” but the Panasonic had a more professional feel to it, was easy to hold for long periods of time, and seemed more rounded. If your going to use a tripod, light your settings correctly, and try to venture into a cheap but professional world of videography on a budget, then you can’t go past the Panasonic NV SG-27. It has bang for the buck! This is Micky-G signing out. | | Micky-G | 08/01/2007 15:30:12 |
