Computer Networking Buyers Guide
A network is a group of computers that are connected together, either physically with leads and cables, or wirelessly, in order to share information and hardware.
Exactly what is needed depends on what sort of computer networking is being carried out. In the case of LAN (local area networks) all that is needed is two or more computers and a means to connect them. Other networks may have a server computer and a number of other computers called 'nodes'. Wide area networks or WANs are of far greater complexity, requiring connectivity over significant distances which may include dedicated physical lines, microwave connections and so forth. WANS are largely the preserve of commercial enterprises.
Things to look out for when purchasing networking equipment
Firstly, you must decide on what sort of computer networking you require. Wireless networks will require Wifi or Bluetooth connectivity on all machines involved, so if it is not built in to the machine than adapters will be required. These can take the form of plug-in dongles, PCMCIA cards or internal cards for desktops. For physical connections, all computers will require compatible network cards, as well as a means of connecting them, the most common of which is Ethernet. In most cases you will also need a modem / router to provide broadband internet connectivity. This may be via a dedicated ADSL line or via a cable connection if cable is available in your area.
Ultimately, the individual choices for computer networking equipment will depend greatly on what the network is required for, how far apart the computers are. Wireless networks have range limitations although the latest generation of Wireless-N systems offer greatly improved reception. That said, barriers such as internal walls, together with interference from other electrical and wireless devices will reduce the potential range. You will also need to decide how flexible the network needs to be - if computers will be removed or added on a regular basis, wireless may be a better choice.
