Computer Systems Buyers Guide

Upon deciding that you need a new computer, you are immediately faced with numerous questions regarding the different computer systems you could potentially buy. Do you want a laptop or desktop, a PC or Mac? All before you even consider the detailed specification of the processor, memory, hard drive and other components that go into computer systems.

If portability is something you require then there is no question than you opting for a laptop rather than a desktop. Indeed, if you need a highly portable computer then you should consider a netbook, which is a very small laptop with lower specifications than normal computer systems. It is useful for basic tasks, such as web browsing and emailing. The hard drive, in particular is likely to be very restricted in terms of size and you will probably have to forgo an optical drive altogether. If the choice between laptop and desktop computer system is less clear cut, then you should consider that generally desktops are cheaper, they are more expandable and as such may last you much longer than a laptop. If screen size is important to you (for example because you like watching DVDs on your computer), then it is much more economical to buy a desktop with a separate large monitor than to buy a laptop with a large built-in screen. The laptop's advantages come from its compactness and also the fact you can carry it around the house and use it in a number of different rooms at your convenience. This is great if you have a wireless home network.

Choosing between a PC and a Mac is sometimes more an issue of ideology than technology. Assuming you are impartial, your major considerations are price and compatibility. Macs will generally be more expensive than PCs, so you have to be willing to pay more for a Mac. You should always check the compatibility of the hardware and software you want to use with both the PC and Mac. PC computer systems are generally compatible with everything and, although more and more software and hardware is compatible with Macs, there are likely to be some things that are incompatible. In particular, if you are a keen gamer then you will have to buy a PC. On the other hand, if you are going to be doing a lot of video-editing and digital design, it is widely regarded that Mac computer systems are the best for those tasks.
