Cooling Fans Buyers Guide

Cooling fans are, of course, electrical devices that produce a flow of air with high volume but low pressure. A flow of air passing over the human body assists in the evaporation of moisture, or perspiration, from the skin, creating a cooling effect. Cooling fans may not actually reduce temperature or humidity levels in the same way as an air conditioning system, but they are nevertheless inexpensive, energy efficient and suitable for rooms of any size.

All fans were not created equal and there are several aspects of design, build quality, etc., that may influence your choice. Axial fans or, in other words, fans that have several angled blades which rotate about a central axle to force air forward, can be up to 70% more efficient than so-called paddle fans. This is because the blades of an axial fan are aerodynamically designed to move as high a volume of air as possible for a given amount of energy.

Even the speed controls can affect the efficiency of a cooling fan and the lifetime of its motor. Inexpensive cooling fans tend to have simple, stepped speed controls which apply or release a brake to the motor. This is hugely inefficient, however and more sophisticated cooling fans have electronic speed controls which waste less energy and generate less heat.

The build quality of a cooling fan is important, especially if it is to be used in a commercial or industrial environment and other factors to consider are the amount of noise produced by a cooling fan and whether oscillation of the fan – that is, movement to and fro – is desirable.
