We bought this for Lucy who is almost 5, but as the other reviewers have pointed out, its just too hard for a small child. I cant believe that we 40+ year olds were more dexterous - I remember creating some very satisfying patterns on my own spirograph - so I can only assume that the toys structure has been changed over the years. I dont know how durable the toy is - its made of strong stuff, but as Lucy has only played with it for about half an hour, it hasnt been truly put the test.

However, I have been disappointed by this set, as its hard to achieve anyhting useful. The instructions show some great results, but its not always clear how to follow the instructions to achieve similar results. The pieces dont fit particularly well adding further complications. My daughter doesnt play with this much anymore. She just got disappointed that she wasnt able to achieve much more than a few squirly patterns, depsite my help.
