Desktop Computers Buyers Guide
Although these days many people are opting for laptop computers rather than desktop computers, (largely because the cost of a laptop has decreased a lot in recent years) there are still many reasons to buy desktop computers if you are not interested in portability. It is still a lot cheaper to buy desktop computers instead of laptop computers if you want a powerful machine and the expandability of desktop computers gives you a lot more options, now and particularly in the future, when compared to the relatively fixed specification of laptops. This can save you a lot of money long term.
If you are a general purpose user you should find that you will be able to buy a desktop with a dual-core processor and 1-2GB of memory quite cheaply. This sort of specification will allow you to do most normal tasks, such as web browsing, emailing, running office applications, viewing photos and managing your MP3 music collection. You should also seriously consider buying a 128MB or 256MB graphics card, especially if you will be wanting to play games. Examine the recommended specifications for the operating system, office applications and games you will be using and make sure the specification you by at least matches those. You should be able to purchase a nice LCD monitor quite cheaply; 19 inches is a nice size for an ordinary desktop. All desktop computers should come with a DVD-burner drive and at least a 250GB hard drive. You can always upgrade your desktop computer in the future, so don't be too concerned about buying the best if you really don't need it.
If you are a power user, which normally means you are either a keen computer game player or you do lots of video editing or digital design, then you will need to be spending more on a higher specification machine. You should be looking at Intel Core 2 Duo or quad-core processors, 4GB of RAM memory and between 500GB and 1TB (1,000GB) of hard drive space. Most desktop computers have room for two internal hard drives. You may find that getting two hard drives instead of one is the best and cheapest way to achieve this capacity. You should buy the best graphics card you can afford. You should also seriously consider getting a Blu-Ray drive and a HD monitor, if your budget will stretch to them.
