Compact flash cards are most commonly used for storing pictures in digital cameras, but are also used in devices such as PDAs and portable music players. There are two types of Compact Flash cards, creatively named Type I and Type II. Type I cards are 3.3 mm thick, while Type II are 5 mm thick. IBM makes a MicroDrive card that has the same dimensions as a Type II CF card, but uses an actual hard drive construction rather than flash memory. Compact Flash cards originally could only store a few megabyes of data, but now can store several gigabytes. The new CF+ standard can store a possible 137 GB of data. I dont know about you, but Id think about backing up that information before throwing the card in my pocket. | * Compact Flash Card: No | | * Multimedia Card: Yes | * Reduced Size Multimedia Card: No | * Smart Media Card: No | * XD Card: No | * Secure Digital Card: Yes | * Mini Secure Digital Card: No | * Secure Digital High Capacity Card (SDHC): Yes | * Micro Drive: No | * Memory Stick / Memory Stick Pro: No | * Memory Stick Duo / Duo Pro: No | * microSD/ TransFlash Card: No | * Serial Shot Mode: Yes | * RAW Format: No | * Maximum Aperture Wide: 3.3 | * Maximum Aperture Tele: 4.9 | * Weight in Grams: 214 | * Photo Resolution Width in Pixel: 3456 | * Video Resolution Heigth in Pixel: 720 | * Video Resolution Width in Pixel: 1280 | * Longest Shutter Speed in s: 60s | * Shortest Shutter Speed in s: 1/2000s | * Photo Resolution Height in Pixel: 2592 | * Depth in mm: 37 | * Height in mm: 59 | * Width in mm: 103 | |

I totally agree with Mr Cripps review and I am pleased its not just me!
I have juts returned back from a second friends wedding this year and the pictures inside the church (fairly low light) and the reception are all pretty much awful. The focussing took so long the bride walked past me up the aisle before it took the picture, missing the shots altogether.... BOTH WAYS!!! Its going on Ebay soon. A very poor indoor performer and as most of my pics are taken at parties etc then this is a very very poor choice. Can anyone recommend a good alternative? Big zoom if possible but not essential. Smaller size preferred.

Reviewed by: Amazon Reviewer Rating: Date Reviewed: 28Jan2009 | | | Let me start by saying this camera has excellent reviews everywhere, which is why I bought it. I have a Canon DLSR (40D) and several other pocket cameras from Ricoh, Canon and Nikon. The gripes I have with this are image quality (it just isnt brilliant) and speed of operation. I think the later is due to the extensive zoom range for such a small body (the Ricoh was better at 7x zoom) and the shutter lag is not as low as some reviewers might suggest (forget any sports or action shots). Video quality is excellent, tone and colour rendition excellent, features are difficult to match is a similar price/size anywhere. But ultimately the picture quality is below par. Possibly the 10MP sensor is too small for this aperture of lens, the noise reduction above ISO100 is intrusive and the focus lock hopeless indoors and other low-light situations. Its not a bad canera if coming from a 5MP old style Nikon or Ricoh, but if you have a Canon Ixus this seems slow and poor quality images, despite the other advantages of the zoom range and pixel count. Ive moved back to the Ixus 850IS.

Reviewed by: Amazon Reviewer Rating: Date Reviewed: 23Jan2009 | | | Very good camera for the price. Loads of flexibility and a great back up for an SLR. My only complaint is video sound. Video quality is mightly impressive for essentially a stills camera - HD quality. Why could Panasonic not have got the sound sorted? Anyway, generally speaking a cracking bit of kit.
Reviewed by: Amazon Reviewer Rating: Date Reviewed: 17Jan2009 | | | This is a short review, as other people have generally given my impression. It is an excellent camera, but as with all these zoom cameras, do not obstruct the lens in any way, as it is easy to do this if knocking the `on` button while inserting in a case or holdall, and then you have a worthless camera! What I do is make sure it is on the review setting while putting in its case, then you have it (the zoom lens) double locked.
Reviewed by: Amazon Reviewer Rating: Date Reviewed: 07Jan2009 | | | The first time I took this camera out in public (a bbq) and snapped a few photos, I had at least 3 people asking for its details with intent on buying it next day - its that good. They were far from the last folks to show real surprize at the quality of the images. And the thing just looks great too - a fine 3 inch screen against matt black finish with brushed-silver dials and lens (Leica. German). Theres a welcome solidness to it too, with just enough weight to suggest real quality. When you switch it on, you quickly realise its as well designed on the inside too: the menu options are easy to navigate and require only common sense. It took me just minutes to get to grips with the multi-page layout...NOT THAT IT MATTERS! Youll never go there again! Why? The iAuto function! Select `iAuto` and, as far as I can see, youll never touch the dials/menu again. In this function I took photos in countless settings both indoors and out, and was truly amazed at how the camera nailed it every time - fairgrounds, mountains, sunsets, my sons leaping around, parties etc. It appears to have a fill-in flash function, as even with a strong light source behind the subject, the final image is balanced. The ONLY thing you might want to do is cancel the `forced-flash` when taking shots of movement when theres plenty light around (and thats but one-button away). Take the ease of use, the truly wonderful quality of the photos and the sheer pleasure of the x10 optical zoom, and you have a marvel of a camera. One last thing - the choice of memory card should NOT be a casual affair. On recomendation I bought the Sandisk Extreme III (its pretty cheap with Amazon...and incredibly expensive without!). This allows you to use what panasonic call the `burst` option - just hit the button and the camera will take (what sounds like) 2 photos per second without hiccups. Until now, I had just put any old sd card in my camera...big mistake! If you want a camera able to beautifully record both your family and travel highlights, look no further.
Reviewed by: Amazon Reviewer Rating: Date Reviewed: 05Jan2009 | | | Just purchased this product following recommendation from friend. Ive changed my camera every year - this is the best so far. Slightly heavier than many others - but easy to `pocket` Instructions simple to follow (Im generally pretty slow with instructions) Large screen superb for viewing. Optical magnification of 10 quite amazing. Pictures in daylight - excellent. Some disappointment with night time and other low light shots. (perhaps i havnt quite got the `hang of it`) Will persevere to try and get improvement.
Reviewed by: Amazon Reviewer Rating: Date Reviewed: 02Jan2009 | | | Ive been using this camera for 6 months now, and must admit its been bit of a dissapointment, for which others and I have given it an affectionate nickname which I cant repeat where kids might see! I purchased it to suppliment my Canon 400D dslr and replace my Canon Powershot S3 as I wanted a newer, smaller camera to take around with me in my pocket when the 400d was either not needed or impractical, and needed a large zoom range. The TZ5 seemed to fit the bill nicely.
Outside in bright conditions/daylight or inside, close range with flash, the camera is great. Clear, crisp photos, good focusing, lots of settings etc, and decent HD video recording. Also wonderful for just putting in your pocket when your out and about and keeping on you just incase.
However, in low light settings, indoors without flash or zoomed in too far (inside even with flash), its pretty usless! If you can take a picture at ISO 100 or 200 then your fine, but ISO 400 and above gives unacceptable levels of picture noise and blur, at least compared to every other camera ive used and ive used a few!
As I tend to do most of my shooting under low light conditions, the TZ5 has been bit of a dissapointment and with hindsight, I think I would have been better going for another Canon.
Bottom line, great little camera for outdoor shooting/every day pics, but not very good at all under low light settings.
Reviewed by: Amazon Reviewer Rating: Date Reviewed: 09Dec2008 | | | ive had this camera for over 6 month and put it thru its paces quite a bit. works fine, although low light indoor conditions could be improved. pretty robust too. my kids have grabbed it a few time, indoors and out. so far it has survived! also if you like to make money or give to charity with your shopping you can link to amazon via pigsback.
Reviewed by: Amazon Reviewer Rating: Date Reviewed: 22Nov2008 | | | Cameras menus work smoothly and are easy to use. There are nifty options like semi-automatic adjustment of time zones, power-saving modes plus all standard like control of white-balance, autofocus, ISO, etc.
With single click of a button you can set maximum zoom (thats useful for camera with 10× zoom), change exposure, bracketing/HDR, macro and flash settings.
Photos are good (even in low light). You can make movies in very high quality by switching to 16:9 aspect ratio.
Battery charger is external. Camera cant be charged from USB. It comes with a little box you can use to carry spare battery.
Works perfectly with iPhoto. Fits in a pocket.
Reviewed by: Amazon Reviewer Rating: Date Reviewed: 16Aug2008 | | | For a pocket camera, the features and results of this camera are astonishing. And for a camera that doesnt actually have a manual mode, it sure has a surprising number of options that give you extensive control over exposure and behaviour.
My gripe is not with the camera, but with this particular bundle. Specifically, the Inov8 4-Gbyte Class 6 SDHC card supplied with this bundle is too slow for the camera. When recording video in wide-screen HD mode (one of the main reasons for buying a TZ5 over a TZ4), youve got between 5 and 50 seconds until recording stops because the card cant keep up. Very disappointing. The card can keep up with 848x480 video recording, but not 1280x720 (HD). As theres no telling what kind of crappy SDHC card youll get in a bundle, if you want a TZ5 then I suggest you buy the camera alone and then find the fastest SDHC card you can as a separate purchase. Youll have to do that anyway to get the most out of the camera.
2008-09-02 Just to follow up my original post and reply to comments. Yes, I can confirm that just because a card is class 6 doesnt guarantee that it will be fast enough for this camera. It only guarantees a minimum transfer speed of 6 MB/s. The TZ5 manual recommends a 10 MB/s card minimum for video. Not all class 6 cards are equal, and to make matters worse classes beyond 6 havent officially been defined yet. Until the industry decides to update the SDHC card speed specifications and nomenclature, youll be dependent on reviews like this to find out what works and what doesnt. I can confirm that one card which IS fast enough for the TZ5 is the Panasonic SDHC class 6 4GB Pro High Speed card (RP-SDV04G), which has a speed rating up to 20 MB/s and gives me continuous HD video without interruption until the card fills up.
And I dont know why Amazon have changed the specifications of this bundle from a 4GB card to 2GB while keeping the same review, but the same issues apply.
Reviewed by: Amazon Reviewer Rating: Date Reviewed: 22May2008 | | | Great compact camera. Quick and easy to use with an amazing zoom. Stabilisation works very well and over all shots look very impressive especialy for a compact. Bit bigger than the adverage digital compact these days - but it more than makes up for it in ability and features and it still manages to fit comoftably in my pocket.
A few features not really outlined in most reviews:
Takes widescreen vid + you can zoom in & out whilst filming.
Can takes panoramic shape stills.
The 28mm wide angle to 10x tellephoto really does work as well as they claim.
Looks cool in blue.
