Drum Heads Buyers Guide

In any drum kit, a membrane fits over the ends of a drum, referred to as the drum heads. If you have to replace your drum heads, the chances are that your ears will let you know before your hands do. Heads do not need to break to need replacing. A good drummer, like a good guitarist will be able to tell whether their instrument is out of tune. When you try to retune your drums, you may find that the heads will not retain the tuning for any length of time and in those circumstances, it is better to replace them.

Traditionally, heads were formed from animal skin. This was largely replaced by various forms of plastic in the 1950s. Today's polyester (and sometimes fibre forms such as Kevlar) heads are vastly more durable than earlier versions, with modern manufacturing techniques allowing for a vast range of styles and sounds.

Sometimes your hands will tell you first and the drum head will not feel or respond the way it once used to do. How quickly drum heads need replacing will depend on the amount they are used and with what force they are played. Many drummers wear out the snare drum head first, mainly because it tends to get harder strokes and as the snare is such an integral part of the overall drum sound, it is more noticeable when it is not quite right. There are a number of options when it comes to replacing the drum heads. This generally boils down to whether an individual drummer prefers a certain sound which may mean less durability, or whether durability is more important than the overall sound. You can check how much abuse your drum kit gets by looking at a drum head after the first time you try it and see how much damage has been done. This may give you some idea as to how long it might last. Some drummers have to change one or more of their drum heads after each performance!

The bottom heads may also need changing, although perhaps not as frequently as the top drum heads: these will deteriorate over time due to the vibration caused by the drum being hit. Once they have deteriorated to a certain level, they can adversely affect your sound.
