panasonicDMREX78EBKI ordered this item and was promised delivery within 48 hours on the 30th of December 2008. As promised the item got here on that date at 9.15 prompt in the morning and it was well packaged and i set it up later that night. It does exactly what it says on the tin and it does a very good job as well-so far it has only missed one recording schedule I had made but I think that one was my fault!!! Other reviewers have indicated that it makes a bit of fan noise in the background.....there is none on this example whatsoever and to be honest i wouldnt know it was there. My DVD collection has been given another lease of life and looking at some recent ones i have now seen subtle changes and altogether more detail that i did not see before thanks to the 1080p unscaling that this DVD recorder does so well! Whats more i am only using a cheap optical/gold plated HDMI cable kit made by a company called Fisual that i bought through amazon that cost me £16 the pair inc. p&p I am sure if you have a truly high end a-v system then you may spot the difference between cheap cable and more expensive ones but buying the Panasonic and the cables has made me one happy bunny and would wholeheartedly recommend this player to anyone. Picture quality on digital broadcasts are very good as well so no qualms there. My only negative point i have to make is the adverts that are on the "guideplus" they take about a 33% of the tv screen real estate but you dont get something for nothing in this world these days so therefore its a small penalty to pay, also the second point is that there is no analogue tuner installed so this item will be of no use in a non digital broadcast area. Apart from that all i would like to say is thanks Panasonic you did it again! 5 out of 5Amazon Reviewer19/01/2009 01:01:01

LGRHT398HBrilliant product. Bought for my aging mother-in-law to replace dead VCR. She needed something easy to use: this is it. She probably wont use all the functions but this is so easy and she is delighted with it. I set it up for her and showed her how to use the basics in minutes. So impressed with quality and functions, Im thinking of buying one for myself now, to go in the bedroom. Not as esy as Sky+ but a lot cheaper in the long run.5 out of 5Amazon Reviewer16/01/2009 01:01:01

panasonicDMREX78EBKI have had this machine for a few days now and have so far found it to be very good. I purchased this unit to replace a now aging LG dvd recorder which had refused to play or record on any discs apart from RW discs(very odd). Anyway I decided to get a new recorder and this time thought I may as well get one with a hard disc as well. As many of my recordings were of things I would later erase the hard disc option of the Panasonic was perfect and with the DVD I had the option to record the things I wanted to keep. To be honest I was torn between the Panasonic and the Humax pvr machine, both have things going for them, The Humax has 2 tuners but it does not have the DVD and for me this was the clincher as I really wanted to make hard copies. I also dont think that the Humax has the option to record from an external source and as I have Sky I wanted to be able to make hard copies of programs not available from the freeview platform. Since it arrived I have played around with it a little and I find it very easy to use and logical in operation. So much so that I have only glanced at the manual to read the specs. Having said that I am speaking as someone who has experience of these type of machines and anyone who has not had or used a dvd recorder or pvr before it may take an hour or two to get to grips with it. However on the whole its very simple to use. Eg To record a single program to internal HD. *Press guide button *Choose the program you want to record fom the 7-day guide and highlight it. *Press OK *An option appears to record once or series. *Select Single timer rec *Press OK again to confirm Thats it your program will be recorded. No messing with video plus codes or entering start or stop times into record timers. The machine also has many other features like a built in CD database which can detect which CD you are playing and provide album and track details. It also can record and play all (except Blu-ray) DVD formats. It could be improved with 2 tuners to match Humax, which would enable you to record one channel while recording something else. Then again is there that much worth watching these days ? Anyway the the DMR-EX78EB-K does all I need and more. It is very quiet in operation and I am very pleased with it. 5 out of 5Amazon Reviewer10/01/2009 01:01:01

SONYRDRHXD995Very pleased with this piece of kit, so far cannot fault it on anything major so have given it the five star treatment. Am using it with a two year old Samsung 32" HD tv, and the set-up process was effortless. First time Ive tried connecting anything to the HDMI and my only minor niggle so far is that the tv doesnt automatically recognise the Sony connection as it would with a scart lead. Having checked several forums, this seems to be pretty common when using HDMI between different makes. All the features are pretty easy to get to grips with, I was pausing live tv and making timed recordings within an hour of getting it out of the box. Playback is excellent, especially at the HQ level, in fact you forget youre watching a recording. The instruction manual, though lengthy, is clearly laid out, and covers most eventualities. All in all, very happy. 5 out of 5Amazon Reviewer06/01/2009 01:01:01

SONYRDRHXD890BReally it is very hard to find fault with this product. As a minor niggle the EPG doesnt display channel number, but how trivial is that if it gives the full name? Given that it is a single tuner machine it will do all reasonable combinations of more than one thing at a time, e.g. record while playing back. One it wont do is dub from HDD to DVD while recording something else, but this is hardly a big issue. It has lots of options for recording and indeed for other operations too, but it is actually very simple to install and use if you are using it for digital reception only and with an HDMI TV, and the default option almost always works fine. The only good things about the manual are that at least it is an actual printed thing and not just on CD, and in English only. Otherwise the print quality is poor, the logical structure is poor, there are few useful hints, and the descriptions of the more complex operations are not easy to follow.5 out of 5Amazon Reviewer06/01/2009 01:01:01

ToshibaRD88DTKTBHaving purchased no less than five of these machines in the last three years, all returned to the Retailer as they were over-rated, of poor quality and hopelessly inadequate (two of them were Wharfedales, from which I expected a lot more having read loads of decent reviews), I opted to spend a little more on getting what I hoped was a better quality HDD recorder. Boy, am I glad I stumbled upon this beauty! First of all, compared to Comet (£238 at the time) I got this machine for £150 or thereabouts. Secondly, it looks and feels good, and the manual, despite its 95 pages, has thankfully not been "translated". No offence intended, but due to it having so many functions, its better to be written in proper English. Thirdly, and most importantly, it is of very good quality and so far Ive found nothing to moan about. Im learning new tricks by the day and I dont have a bad word to say about the machine. And thanks to Amazon, I got it within 48 hours of purchase despite requesting super saver delivery. 5 out of 5Amazon Reviewer03/01/2009 01:01:01

PANASONICDMREX88EBKI bought a Panasonic DMR EX88EB after a truly awful experience with the buggy rushed-to-market Philips DVDR 5570H. Unlike the Philips machine, the Panasonic just gets on with the job - the EPG was downloaded within minutes of the first power up, the unit responds to remote control button presses quickly, it hasnt crashed once, its recorded everything I asked it to, and it all just works. Picture quality is noticeably better than the Philips too. Interestingly, my TV now switches to the HDMI input within two or so seconds. It would take 5-10 seconds with the Philips machine (including 2 seconds of bright green screen - very Doctor Who!). Some quirks with the Panasonic Ive found so far: - You need a Scart lead during the initial setup (and one isnt supplied in the box), even if you only intend to use HDMI. This isnt documented in the patchy instruction manual. Once the Panasonic and your TV have agreed to talk to each other via HDMI (this happens towards the end of the initial setup), various HDMI menus become available, and you can unplug the bulky Scart lead and put it away. - You cant set another timed recording whilst the machine is recording something. You cant even view the Guide. Odd. - Theres a mysterious comb filter in the picture menu. It isnt explained anywhere in the manual what this really does for you. - Most people are using HD TVs, and most are 1080i or p. The Machines user interface is clearly designed for a much lower resolution, so looks blocky and pixellated on a decent TV. Scalable font technology has been around for years, so I cant see why Panasonic cant tidy this up. It is 2008 after all (or even 2009 when you read this). Finally, and please excuse the shouting, but THERE IS NO ANALOGUE TUNER built in. If you cant get high quality Digital TV signals in your area, the Panasonic is not the machine for you. Otherwise, buy one! 5 out of 5Amazon Reviewer29/12/2008 01:01:01

PanasonicDMREZ28EBKI originally bought the Toshiba RDXV48 - 160Gb Hard Drive DVD Recorder & VHS Combi With Freeview as a Christmas present for my elderly father (hes 91) who has a lot of old VHS cassettes hes recorded off the TV over the last 20 years. Unfortunately, the remote control is filled with about 55 small buttons with very small text above each one and my father could not work it, usually ending up in a menu he couldnt get out of. The solution was for me to have the Toshiba, buy my father this Panasonic DVD recorder and he can continue to use his old video recorder. The reason we decided on this model is because there are not as many buttons and some of them (the main ones) are quite large. It also accepts Panasonic 3x speed, 4.7GB, 10 pack DVD-RAM Disc which my father can use to record Columbo and keep them to watch a few times before recording over them. He still gets confused, occasionally pressing the red freeview button when he is trying to record something, but its not as bad as when he used the Panasonic. Therefore, highly recommended for older folk and people who misplace their reading glasses.5 out of 5Amazon Reviewer21/12/2008 01:01:01

LGDRT389HWent from a Samsung to this model and this is a giant leap in comparison. Clear pictures, easy recording, freeview no problems, lets me plug in a usb stick (!!!!!!!!!!!!!). Great stuff for the price. I found the negative reviews here slightly fair - its not for advanced users. Cheap but very cheerful. Its simple to set up and has a quick boot up time. Really, really like this machine. 5 out of 5Amazon Reviewer13/12/2008 01:01:01

PanasonicDMREZ25This is very easy to set up and auto tune. Good to have freeview tuning. One has to realise that to use the full functions they will only work with DVD-RAM disks. All other disks are compatible however. The instruction book is rather formidable and better understood after some use. I found that the remote control could not be programmed to my make of television. 5 out of 5Ken23/08/2006 13:21:30

Acoustic SolutionsDVD160RW300found out by accident that this recorder plays back region 1 ntsc discs, without having to enter any type of unlock code you must have an ntsc compatable tv, most are these days, I do not know what would happen if it was a standard pal tv set that you were outputing to I assume if the dvd does not convert it to pal then it would only playback in black and white without sound. I would like to point out that the playback picture and sound in region 1 ntsc is very good. 5 out of 5Glenn01/08/2009 08:48:19

ArgosDS8668AThis is an excellent low price DVD recorder/player. I bought it to transfer my old VHS tapes to DVD and it works fine. Connect VCR TV and DVD with 2 scarts and you`re away. Some points to note, if like me you`re no techno. 1.You need to run through the on screen programme before the unit comes to life and allows the disc tray to open. 2.Use the source button to change to scart input. 3.If you want to play the dvd in another player or your pc then you need to go to on screen `Initialize` otherwise the format won`t be recognised. 5 out of 5John Arden17/12/2008 09:08:10

PANASONICDMREX77EBI bought this unit in January 2008. Absolutely brilliant. Not only is it easy to use, it makes obsolete the old VCR and all its mucking around with tapes. Of particular note is the simple recording method direct from the on-screen programme guide and the thumb nail presentation of recorded programmes that you can playback at a touch of a button. I bought a viera enabled flat screen at the same time. I found both units so good I bought the exact same system for my mum. At 75 years old she has had no problem in getting to grips with it. For anyone going digital, I highly recommend this unit. 5 out of 5Steve, Plymouth, UK27/03/2008 07:39:38

PHILIPSDVDR3380I have this DVD recorder and it works great, I use cheap disks too, not branded. No problems recording off sky either. Only thing is this recorder records in region 0 - this is all regions/multiregion. I recorded a dvd for a friend whos dvd player is NOT multiregion, when he puts the disk in his player it says `incorrect region`. The disk plays fine in my cheapo bush player! Im sure there is a solution somewhere on the internet, either to unlock the region on his player or to lock my recorder to region 2 (im off to look now!). Apart from that its great and easy to use. 5 out of 5davethebrush02/10/2007 12:05:44

PHILIPSDVDR3380I have owned this unit for over a year and have not had a single problem like the ones reported here. To record from a Sky+ box you would do the same as with any other machine you want to record from. Press play on Sky, press record on the recorder. Using the Sky+ `copy` command is only ok if you want to record multiple programmes. highlight the ones you want to copy, press select and the press record on the recorder, after a few secs the Sky programmes will start to play one after the other. The Sky+ box will NOT activate recording on the Philips. Now for blank discs, I have tried various discs, cheap and expensive form different manufacturers including Philips with no problems at all. One thing I don`t understand about some reviewers is why they have to buy branded expensive discs at all. I purchased 40 unbranded DVDRW`s for about £20 over a year ago and am still using them. not a single recording has failed. Some people can`t erase discs?? rubbish! If you read the instructions you will see how to erase, format, lock and unlock discs. If you can`t be bothered to do that, then put a used RW disc in, select a channel to record from, press record. There will be a warning that the disc needs to be erased, select `ok` and the disc will be erased saving you of all that hard trouble of reading the manual. I don`t see the point of buying yourself a DVD recorder and then griping about it because you don`t know what you are doing, you are at fault, not the machine! someone said the laser broke, after 2 years, then again after 2 years and now they are on to their third unit. Lets take a closer look at that....1 this model came out nearly 2 years ago, not 4. If your laser fails once fair enough try again, twice thats not good, so why buy a third and then moan about it? The region code someone says does not work proplerly, mines does! So far....my region code works, I can erase discs, I can use any disc from any manufacturer, Sky+ recordings work as easy as any other recordings, my machine has not froze except one time I inserted a disc with a scratch on it (are all you people using clean unscratched discs???) I have had no problems with a drop in the tuner signal. Do I have the only Philips DVDR3380 in the world that works or are these reviews by a bunch of people who are too stupid to read a user manual or set up a couple of scart leads properly. Are they touching the recording side of their discs and just leaving them lying around with no covers? Here`s and idea, get your four year old to help you!! This is a quality player/recorder, DivX playback is excellent and always in sync. recodings are great in 3hr and below and even the lowest quality is watchable and perfect enough for recording TV progs you don`t want to keep. Menu`s are very easy to navigate and setting up is simple, even easier if you read the manual. If you have a partly used disc, select the channel you want to record on, press the `rec mode` button and cycle through the different recording qualities and the machine will show you how much time you have left for each quality, an excellent feature that makes recordings easier. THIS IS A GREAT MACHINE AND HIGHLY RECOMMENDED, BUT NOT FOR PEOPLE WHO CAN`T BE BOTHERED TO READ THE MANUAL. 5 out of 5L.Porter15/06/2007 12:58:48

LGRC1000I think it is excellent. Easy setup, manual easy to follow. At first, was copying videos onto DVD-/+R`s, but these would only play on the machine itself. Then found a longer but better way, using DVD-/+RW`s, and copying them on the computer with Nero/DVD Shrink onto DVD-/+R`s, then playable on any DVD Player, Have copied most of video`s (except for copyrighted ones) onto DVD, it also records well from Sky Satellite Channels. Previously had a Bush Combi machine, nightmare to setup/tune in, took it back to Argos for full refund. Had the LG now for 6 months, perfect! LiteOnLVW5025GHCBought this DVD/HDD 80Gb Recorder recently after owning a Goodmans DVD Recorder for about a year, what an outstanding system, does exactly what it says on the tin!!

The time shift(pause live TV) function is incredible and instant. All recording modes give outstanding results, my input signal is Sky Digital and the playback quality is exactly like the live playback on the first 4 recording modes, and even 0n SLP quality is as good if not better than VHS.

The LVW-5025GHC+ is not just a DVD re-writer that supports DVD+-/R/RW but also records CD/CD-RW, records and copies CDs, and music can be copied to and from the hard disc to CD/DVD.

A very stable product, and an excellent buy at just (£199.99) Hightly recommended.

JVCDRMH20This is a superb product. Disc compatibility is great, combining the versatility and quality of DVD-RAM with the compatibility of the most commonly playable -R format. The interface is powerful and flexible and works well once you get the hang of it. I`ve used this and a Goodmans deck with built in freeview and there is absolutely no contest in terms of quality and ease of use.

Timeslip and watching previous recorded material whilst you record works great and is surprisingly intuitive.

A high quality product - but don`t pay £300 for it! (I got mine for much, much less - but was lucky). JVC models with 160 and 250Gb discs are around for about that price, which appear to be just about identical apart from the superior hard drive capacity.

Buy this one if you can get it cheap - the disc is big enough for quite a lot of recordings and you can easily transfer to DVD-R anything you want to keep unless you are really lazy!(-R discs can be had for less than 40p each on a spool).

Lite-ONLVW5006The LiteOn 5006 is the first DVD recorder I bought after using high quality Panasonic and Samsung VCRs for years. I recently got a Philips Freeview box and, seeing as I now have a MiniDV camcorder and xmas is coming up, I thought it was time to upgrade to DVD. In a nutshell the LiteOn is a revelation: DVD-/=R/RW and CD Audio/VCD/SVCD recording make it unique. Full of excellent features, inputs and the brilliant `Easyguider` system, it`s a must buy at the price. I`d recommend you use +RW discs for re-recording and whatever you want for the rest. LiteOn make the computer CD/DVD drives for Sony so that can only be a good thing. Plus, you can easily make it Multi-Region. BUY IT...WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR? 5 out of 5ZDElectronics18/12/2005 16:15:02

PANASONICDMRES101)Very good picture quality. Very easy to use... I was able to start recording with it without opening the manual.

2)Records on to DVD-RAM, DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R It does not record on to DVD+RW, CD-R, CD-RW.

3)If you start recording something, and then come back to the machine after a while and want to start watching the recording from the beginning, while the machine is still recording, then you can do this using a DVD-RAM disk but not with any of the other types of disk.

4)It has a very handy feature called `flexible record`. If you are recording something that would normally take say one and a third 4.7GB disks, then you can use `flexible recording` to specify the duration of the recording and the machine will fit the recording on to one 4.7GB disk, using all the space on the disk to give the best possible recording quality.

5)The machine has videoplus and pdc.

6)The machine does not have a hard drive. Machines with a hard drive can do the procedure in 3) above using the hard drive. However the DVD-RAM disks effectively work like small removable hard drives because you can write to and read from them simultaneously.

SONYRDRHX710This machine delivers, fantastic picture quality from recordings on hard disk & DVD single layer & even better on dual layer for longer recordings Liked the fact if you recorded something to hard disk and want to keep it, it will burn to DVD as well and does so in about a minute or so, shame dual layer disks are pricy at the moment though but i`m sure they will drop in price like single layer disk DVD play back from retail disks/rental are fab via RGB and the sounds very good as well Shame Divx isn`t surported If I had a HD tv set then i would have gone for the 910 model 5 out of 5Knoby23/11/2005 11:00:57

LITEONLVW5005This smart looking machine not only plays `PLUS`and `MINUS`disk formats, but will record to them too. If you have a DV camcorder, then the DV IN socket located on the front is just the job for capturing your movies straight to disk. The EASY GUIDER button will make everything clear for whatever function you wish to perform. The LVW 5005 has a built in TV Tuner and Scarts for your Digibox connection etc. A nice remote control and six hours recording on each disk.

Lite-ON5045Agree with previous review about remote - it is flimsy. However for the price - wow! Huge hard disk, excellent picture quality, format compatability and easy navigation make this a winning combination all round. 5 out of 5Bob05/04/2005 21:10:10

PANASONICDMRE95 MultiregionVery nice product. Easy to use and set up, and good picture and build quality. I"ve only found minor niggles so far: it takes a long time (~30 sec) to "boot up", and to read DVDs before you can play them; and you can"t put chapters where you want them when recording DVD-Rs (in my case I was copying home video copied from DV, edited on the HDD then burned to DVD-R.) For a complex product, the user interface is very clear and easy to use. Recording from TV and DV is easy, and it displays still images from SD or other flash card (with an adaptor) beautifully. Highly recommended. 5 out of 5PG, Cambridge26/02/2005 11:19:00

PIONEERDVR220Sthis dvd recorder is superb, it"s my first dvd recorder but what an intro to the dvd recorder world, i paid £135 on ebay from a reputable seller and its excellent, set up took a while but eventually got there in the end, best features i would say is the navigation which lets you play an intro into what you have already recorded, and not only on the disc thats inserted at the time, but others that have recently been used, this sytem is like having an hard drive, but not if you see what i mean, there is also time slip, which lets you watch the beginning of the recording whilst its still recording, superb feature, and the best bit is the various types of recording speed, you have FINE, SP, LP, EP, AND MN.. ep being the longest and meant to be the worst recording picture and sound, but its fantastic quality, even better than vcr and the others are flawless, it uses dvd-r/rw discs, which are the cheapest anyways so thats an added bonus, lol. but seriously, this is a great recorder especially at the price i paid, so go get one and try it out, oh and manual is easy to read too, with excellent set up help.. 5 out of 5andy t01/02/2005 10:00:35
