I purchased this unit through Amazon because they offered a good price and had a good product search engine. I needed to transfer old family videos to DVD and this unit seemed ideal. Also, our old VHS recorder broke down and my wife prefers VHS recording to DVD, (I hope this will change shortly). The main advantage VHS has over DVD is that one can play tapes originally made in other machines whereas rewrite DVD disks have to be played back in the machine they were made on. This is a problem if one has a recorder in the lounge and wants to watch recorded programmes later in the bedroom. The machine itself is well designed and very easy to use. However, it would not work well with brand new SONY VHS tapes. I tried TDK tapes and these were much better, (I threw away 10 brand new SONY tapes purchased from TESCO). I have only had the machine for a month so its long term performance cannot be assessed. It is likely that the VHS recording system will quickly deteriorate so I am transferring my tapes to DVD now. I expect the DVD recording system to last much longer and my wife and I will probably only use this facility in the future.

My first recorder was awful could not play back any of my old tapes, rang Sony who did not help at all, sent back to Amazon who quickly sent out replacement unit. Second unit ok- video wise not perfect though. The one saving grace is the dvd part which does its job once you work out the timings for each speed.
I would not recommend this unit. The first Sony i have to give a thumbs down to.

Bought this in March 2008 to be able to watch VHS and DVDs, plus transfer between the two formats. The DVD element works fine; however the VHS part doesnt!
Tried using brand new VHS tapes, which was a slight improvement. Pre-recorded (commercial) tapes wouldnt play back without substantial tracking interference or dropping out completely to a blank grey screen. Tried transferring known good quality DVD to a brand new tape and this was 80-90% successful but with periodic dropping out to the blank grey screen. So theres a fault, or design problem, with the analogue VHS part of this equipment.
So I dont recommend buying it!
Surprising that someone like Sony could produce something as poor as this.
