Toy Instruments comprises an eye-popping collection of musical toys made between the 1950s and today. In theory, all of these toys are meant to excite children about learning how to play an instrument. What becomes clear, however, is that these products could be as much fun for adults as children, especially for adults with their own musical interests. From the late 70s to the early 80s, the heyday of these bleeping, chirping, thrumming and keening devices, while children were busy driving their parents crazy with these batterypowered sounds, adults were incorporating the unique tones into the earliest samples of electronic music and techno. Divided into chapters like Sing Along, Rhythm Machines, Voice Changers and Musical Animals, which provide details and commentary about the individual toys, Toy Instruments represents the crossroads of educational and weird. Just as dazzling as the cacophony of sounds produced by these toys are the designs of the toys, as well as their packaging. Made all over the world, the predominately gender-neutral design applied to the products and packaging is at times more fascinating than the toys.Culled from the authors personal collection, Toy Instruments is the first book to explore this niche of the toy industry, doing so with an informative and humorous approach, demonstrating how even in todays world of Guitar Hero and Wii, these musical toys from a bygone era are irreplaceable. the amount of info this thing gives is amazing, very educational, even for when they go to secondary school - a great investment!

I was sceptical due to the price of this and since it was for my 5-year old, though this has proved to be a hit. Yes, it is expensive, though as a way to introduce a child to the world, to get them to explore the countries and capitals - learn about capitals, population, area, high points, money, music and current time, etc in the 2 weeks we had so far it has been an eye opener with him wanting to play and learn (the fact that Antarctica has no currency always brings him hilarity)

The play facilities are again a way to encourage the learning, and even a game for adults too - especially when on the more obscure capitals, but a good way to remind yourself of your geography.

Also worth noting that even small south pacific islands are recocognised - it is not just the main land masses. Extra features are working out comparison - such as distances between locations, and how many times bigger/smaller one country is to another in terms of area and population.

In addition, it has a headphone jack, and automatically shuts down after about a minute of no usage. Takes 4 `C` batteries, though also takes a 6VDC 500mA -ve tipped adapter - one of the standard multi-game-adapter ones work.

I can see this being a long lasting toy/educational aid, and hope that it does not have some of the longevity issues that other users have experienced with the points getting out of sync.. So far so good!

the leapfrog globe was a brilliant purchase for our 5 year old twin boys on their birthday. They love the music for each country and are fascinated by the size and population figures. I think it will be something that they will love and use and learn from for many many years and into secondary school as its informative still for me and their Dad with the information on currency and so on. It was well packaged and in perfect condition on arrival as I was concerned about it surviving the delivery.

I bought this globe for my son(8 years) and daughter(4 years) and they thought it was great. My daughter especially likes the world music mode. My wife and I too have played the name the countries game at the hardest level and it is challenging. One quibble, the pen seems to stop working sometimes....especially when the children are getting a bit excited...but a quick switch off and on cures it. I do think the instructions actually recommend new batteries in this instance.
Overall great fun. and a nice looking toy.

Want to get the kids to actually learn something ? Then this is excellent.
Parents will learn too. Plays games involving continents , capitals , oceans ect ect and plays them against a timer so the kids get better and better. Quite expensive but worth every penny. Will tell you the time across the world and has its own built in clock. Can also do flight times populations and much more.

This globe is absolutely first class. We bought this for our daughter who is 5 for Christmas. She loves it!
I like the idea of being able to find the countries or cities within 45 seconds as I am hopeless at geography and my daughter is beating me already.
Well done Leapfrog for an outstanding toy!!

This globe certainly is a fantastic idea. My seven year old was desparate for a globe for christmas, and this seemed the ideal choice as we would all be able to play with it together over the holiday. How dissapointing then when he opened it on Christmas morning and discovered that it was convinced that most of the northern hemisphere was the artic ocean! We are sendning it back (to Santa) for one more go.

My 8 year old daughter knows more about countries and capitals than any 16/17 year old that babysits for us, a fun educational toy, would recommend it to any parent!!

What a great toy! I bought one of these for my 6 year old son for christmas. He plays with it every single day.

The one we received is a different colour to the one pictured and features an Engish voice. My son really enjoys the quizzes - finding the capitals, oceans, countries etc before the time runs out. There are a few levels - fun for all ages, including adluts! The globe will also tell you facts about each country, and plays a song which is related to each country (not sure if these are accurate, but the kids like them)!

So, all-in-all, a great toy. It is expensive, but my son has literally played with it every single day since Christmas. So well worth the money. We are still on the set of demonstration batteries that came with the globe, so they last a long time, and it seems really well built.
