Electric Guitar Pedals Buyers Guide
Many of the world's top guitarist and bands rely heavily on electric guitar pedals to get their sound. These pedals can transform and enhance a sound to keep the listener interested and often supply that extra something that can make (or break) a track.
There are endless different electric guitar pedals now on the market and they can be combined to create a virtually limitless range of effects. The initial 'stomp box' effects pedal was invariably one effect pedal which could distort, or introduce a wah sound into your sound. Delay, Chorus, Flanger and Phaser all became popular with guitarists. Each box had a range of controls which could be tweaked to get the sound required and by simply pressing a button with the foot, the guitarist could produce a new sound. As time went on, manufacturers such as Boss and Deglitch, began to produce multi effects pedals. These provided a range of pedals on one board, each of which could be played at various times during a song by switching them on and off. As technology advanced many of the effects could be pre programmed and fine tuned.
If you are thinking of buying electric guitar pedals, it is well worth taking the time to listen to some of your favourite songs to try and identify the effects: if you are not sure what created them at least you will be armed with the name of a song. You can then further research this online: there are plenty of sources describing the instruments and effects used in particular tracks. Armed with this information, you should be able to track down the guitar pedal or pedals you need. You may also find that your local music store can offer some insight as many of them are staffed with enthusiasts. Before buying, you need to determine whether you actually need a multi effect pedal, as these will be invariably more expensive, or whether you are likely to be better off mastering several discrete pedals to achieve the sound you want.
