Electricity Safety Buyers Guide
Electricity safety in today's modern, technological environment is extremely important. Computers, tools and many household items run on electricity. If electricity is properly controlled, it is a clean and reliable power source, but can be very dangerous if not treated with the proper respect. There are numerous types of devices used to ensure electrical safety, some of which are considered below.
Hand-held Multimeters
The better, modern, hand-held multimeters are inventive 2-in-1 devices which incorporate a wire / cable tester. These electricity safety diagnostic tools are very useful, allowing the measurement of AC and DC voltage, resistance, current and continuity, without the need to carry two different instruments. Even the cheapest units can check for cable continuity, open-circuits, short-circuits and cross-connections.
Bench Multimeters
Bench top multimeters have traditionally been expensive electricity safety devices. However, recent developments have resulted in competitively-priced multimeters that incorporate many attributes into a neat package, while retaining the functionality and flexibility expected from a bench meter. These pieces of electricity safety equipment make a perfect addition to any workshop, managing a wide range of measurement operations with great precision and resolution.
AC Voltage Detectors
These electricity safety tools tend to be pen-like in appearance, small enough to fit in a pocket. They can safely detect AC voltage without any contact. Furthermore, there is no need for the disconnection of cables and fuses / circuit breakers. When the voltage detector tip is near a "live" point, a flashing red LED indicator illuminates, accompanied by an audible beeper. More expensive models have a forked tip, allowing testing of specific power outlets or cables, making them useful for professional testing.
13-Amp Socket Testers
These testers, shaped like a 13-amp plug, are used as electricity safety diagnostic tools to reveal the condition of electrical circuits. Various tones, along with an LED readout, give an audio-visual indication of a range of wiring conditions such as earth missing, live / neutral reversed etc.
Voltage / Metal / Stud Detectors
These electricity safety tools use an electronic pulse to precisely located AC cables, pipes and studs through common wall materials, thus preventing drilling into them. Capable of detecting AC voltage up to 240v, they emit audio-visual signals, similar to the socket testers above. Safe and easy to use, their ergonomic design allows single-handed operation.
