| HP | Simple Save 320 GB Portable External Hard Drive | I have just bought this, having read about how simple it was to use ... just plug in and bob`s your uncle. Not in my case. I`ve plugged it into the USB port on the computer (there are no instructions apart from a picture showing you how to do this .. further instructions are in the drive apparently) but nothing happened.. Unfortunately, although the blue light on the hard drive is on, there is no other sign of life. When I go to the My PC window, no external drive is recognised. I shall be requesting a refund. It does look nice though! | | Sarah | 05/10/2009 16:29:53 |

| PNY | 128MB Executive Attache USB2 Pen | I really like having the memory in a place where it is readily accessible without the need for a cumbersome strap. But the pen portion is out of ink and now it is useless baggage until I can find a refill. Does anyone sell these small refills and are they available in blue fine point? | | Harry | 26/04/2008 12:56:00 |

| Teac | 20GB Slimline External USB2 | This is very easy to use, and with the USB2 connection the data transfer is done with ease. There are no drivers to load if you are using Windows XP so it is literally a plug and play mass storage device. Due to its size and weight and the fact it is powered by USB it can be used anywhere which is a great advantage to being on the move. The only down side to this item is that it hasnt got a protective case for storing the hard drive when not in use. | | Amazon Reviewer | 28/10/2003 01:01:01 |

| CI-BOX | Cibox 4GB 1 Micro drive USB 2.0 | I have had this product for 4 months and although it has served me well initially it has recently died and taken all my data with it. The moveable socket makes it more fragile and likely to break quickly. | | Anon | 28/01/2009 15:42:09 |

| LaCie | 1TB BIG DISK EXTREME | The drive seems to be ok so far. I`ve only had it for nearly a month, however.
The first thing I noticed, as was mentioned before, is that Windows loses track of the hard drive!
Every so often, the drive changes from NTFS formatting to RAW (which defaults to FAT16). This REALLY screws things up as it can no longer read long filenames. It also doesnt show up in the My Computer folder anymore. This occurs usually after large multi-file transfers.
Keep in mind, Im using USB2.0, I have 3 external hard drives (one Phantom, one Maxtor, and my LaCie drive) and none have had any problems like this except for the Lacie drive.
Restarting the hard drive temporarily fixes the problem as windows will pick it up as NTFS again. I can assume this will get annoying once I fill this thing past the 600GB mark as it takes a long time to preload 600 gigs of files every time you reboot the hard drive.
Either this is a bug in the product or technology needs to catch up to be able to maintain a 1TB drive and keep it stable! The worst part about it is if my 1TB drive starts to fail, there`s no where to back up the data as there are no more drives larger than that one which I own!

| Maxtor | One Touch 160GB 7200rpm external HDD USB2/Firewire | I have a Maxtor one touch ll 200 GB. It worked fine for 6 months then quit being recognised by my PC. I called and was told their drive is internal in the Maxtor and not replacable. I would not recimend this or Seagate to any one. Jerslaughter@hotmail.com | | grumpy gramps | 30/12/2007 10:03:20 |

| Freecom | CLASSIC SL NETWORK 250GB HARD DRIVE | After 13 months the second 250GB Freecom External Hard Drive has packed up. These units are most unreliable and hardly worth the money, though their prices are very low, so is their quality. I would not buy any products from them again, seen my experiences, as I could not face loosing all the information again. | | castellod | 14/05/2007 15:37:32 |

| Maxtor | One Touch 160GB 7200rpm external HDD USB2/Firewire | PLease, please don"t buy this product. I have had 4 fail on me in the past 12 months. This isn"t a relaible backup device. | | Alec | 02/12/2004 13:41:47 |

| Maxtor | One Touch 160GB 7200rpm external HDD USB2/Firewire | As far as I can see I was taken in by what I thought was Maxtor"s good reputation. Following is what I have found out since I bought this drive:
It is SLOW due to the SLOW transfer rate! Maxtor is using a FireWire 1394a chip at 400Mbps rather than the 1394b chip which goes at 800 to 1600 Mbps, and which is VERY AVAILABLE. This means that actual transfer rates may be faster with the older USB2! I should have LEARNED the difference between the different FireWire standards...just because Maxtor states FireWire doesn"t mean anything!
Also, the Retrospect Software is an "Express" version - I guess not a full version. Although OEM somehow it is not even configured properly for the Maxtor drive. For example there is no advice in the Retrospect "HELP" for "One Touch." It is ignored. When you go to use the One Touch button it does not allow you any but the simplest backup. The advanced options in the Retrospect software are NOT at all intuitive through One Touch. For example I cannot find anyway to use that cute (One Touch) button on the drive using the encryption or compression options in the software.
In addition, due to the fact the Retrospect software is OEM (sic) it is not the latest version of Retrospect (6.5) and Maxtor has no upgrade that I can find on its website.
I made the mistake of buying this hardware believing that Maxtor, being a "respected" company would be using the latest hardware standards and would be using fully configured OEM software. | | SteveSp | 11/09/2004 12:50:37 |

| Formac | FWHD1080 | At the moment I could not recommend this product to anyone. I purchased a Formac 80Gb external HD 2 years ago and mine developed a spindle fault after less than two years of operation (not full time use and limited stop/start cycles). One problem occurred in moving the disk to another location and cleared on the third attempt to restart (nasty grinding noises). On the second the fault developed under normal running conditions, with no evident computer activity. Again it restarted after two attempts. As this was purchased to augment and outlive a G4 - it has compeletely failed to live up to the standard that I would expect of such a device.
With a warranty of only 1 year this is useless to me. | | C. Tompsett | 13/01/2004 13:23:45 |

| Cristie Data Products | F109-060 | I tried this drive on Windows 2000 and XP and only got it to work once via USB. Definitely not recommended. In the end I had to strip the 60Gb drive from the casing and use it as an internal drive (so I didn't feel that all my cash was wasted). | | Stevie | 15/08/2003 22:11:02 |

| Lexar Media | 64Mb Jump Drive USB | I have one 64MB JumpDrive. It works fine with my Sony portable computer, however my Sony Desk Top will not recognize that it is attached. Both computers are running windows XP Home edition. What is with that?
