Flat Screen TVs Buyers Guide

When buying flat screen TVs you have the choice between LCD and Plasma technology. These two technologies are completely different, but actually produce very similar results. It is therefore not always obvious which type of technology is best. Originally Plasma TVs were superior when it came to large screen sizes and LCD TVs were best for small screen sizes. Nowadays LCD TVs have caught up with Plasma TVs even at large screen sizes to the extent that Sony, Toshiba and Sharp have completely abandoned making Plasma TVs. So if you are unsure, but don't want to have to think to hard about it, then LCD flat screen TVs are better.

In terms of picture quality the difference between LCD and Plasma flat screen TVs is not huge. LCD TVs are much brighter than Plasma TVs and as such are better for everyday viewing in well-lit rooms. Plasma TV's primary area of superiority for years has been the contrast levels. Plasma TVs are able to produce nice deep blacks, whereas many LCD TVs struggle with this because they use a back lit screen and this back light shining through the screen can cause blacks to appear washed out and grey. The advancement of LCD technology has done much to reduce this problem and many top-line sets have good contrast. In fact, the new LED back light technology that is being use in the latest LCD models (which are sometimes simply called LED TVs), has done much to defeat this issue as the LEDs can be turned off in an area that needs to be black, meaning that the blacks are much deeper. Generally, the quality of the digital processing software within the TV will have a large effect on the quality of the picture meaning that picture quality is dependent on this (and hence the quality of the manufacturer) rather than the type of hardware.

Something that is well established in favour of LCD flat screen TVs is power consumption and energy efficiency ratings. Exact numbers vary, but it is generally estimated that on average an LCD TV uses 50% less electricity than a Plasma TV of equivalent screen size. Hence, an LCD TV will give you both cheaper electricity bills and a smaller carbon footprint. Another small issue that is clearly in favour of LCDs is weight, with an LCD TV weighing significantly less than a Plasma of equivalent screen size. You may not move you TV often, but when you do you will be grateful you bought an LCD.
