These are a multi-purpose kitchen tools capable of slicing, grating, chopping, pureeing and even kneading, all in a fraction of the time taken to do these jobs by hand. They can vary from mini processors (ideal for small quantities like baby food) to machines with a 3 litre capacity that can handle all the food preparation for a large dinner party. If you’re thinking about buying one here are some key factors to consider;
Capacity Measured in litres and ranging from about 1-3 litres. Bigger can be best but only if you have the space. Smaller machines are convenient to use and easy to clean but are obviously quite limited in their capacity.
Blender/Liquidiser Option Some food processors will have these fitted alongside the main bowl. They are very useful for making soups, pureeing fruit for smoothies etc. and some will have attachments for dry foods or even grinding coffee beans. Other machines will have a blender that can be attached in place of the main bowl so that blending can still be done on the same machine. Some processors will not have a blender facility at all, so look carefully at the options available.
Power Measured in watts and ranging from about 500 on the mini processors to 1200 watts on the larger models. More powerful machines usually cost more to buy but usually give better results and in less time.
Attachments These can be many and varied! There will usually be attachments to dice, chop, slice, knead, whisk, extract juice etc. so check these carefully to make sure that you will have everything that suits your particular food preparation needs. Whilst all these different options may sound fantastic, they will only add to you drawer clutter if they’re not going to get used, so choose wisely!
Once you have decided on your main criteria – here are some other feature that you might like to look out for:
Variable Speed Control This allows for different speeds to suit the food being prepared. This can range from 1 speed setting, as in some cheaper models, or up to 8 speed settings in the more expensive ones.
Pulse Function Stops the machine for a few seconds at a time throughout the processing, giving better results especially on tougher foods.
Safety Lock Most, but not all processors, have these. It prevents nasty accidents by ensuring that the processing cannot start if the lid is not “locked on” properly.
GENERAL
Food processors can be extremely useful and can give excellent, consistent results when used in conjunction with the right attachments. Machines with plastic bowls tend to be less expensive, whilst those with stainless steel bowls and casings will cost more but will almost certainly be more hardwearing. Check to see which parts, if any, are dishwasher safe as attachments in particular can be fiddly to clean. Choose a model that is large enough for your needs and a design where the various bowls/attachments fit together easily as this will encourage you to get the most from your processor. Last, but not least, some models now boast “silent” motors! Whilst this cannot, obviously be quite true, some are much quieter than others so ask to see yours working before you buy so that you can hear for yourself!
