Freeview LCD TVs Buyers Guide

If you currently still have your old CRT analogue TV, you must be seriously considering buying a Freeview LCD TV. After all, you are going to have to upgrade to digital TV very soon as all analogue TV transmissions will be terminated before too long. Although it is possible to receive the digital signal on your existing TV by buying a set-top box, you should certainly consider Freeview LCD TVs if you can afford one, as it will be money well spent in the long run.

All Freeview LCD TVs will have a built-in digital tuner so you can access all the new digital channels, as well as the interactive 'red button' content, giving you a deeper viewing experience with a lot more options. The advantage of getting built-in Freeview, instead of buying a set-top box, is that you don't have an additional device with all the extra wires, power supply and remote control that come with it, making your TV area less cluttered and your viewing experience simpler.

In comparison to your old CRT TV, Freeview LCD TVs will seem extremely thin and compact given the size of their screens. The thinness of a TV with an LCD screen allows you to reclaim some of your living space and even gives you the ability to mount your TV on the wall as if it were a picture. You may also have heard of Plasma TVs, but if you are buying a TV that is less than 37 inches, you should not consider them, as an LCD TV will be cheaper, longer-lasting, more energy efficient and easier to watch than the equivalent Plasma TV.

The width of the screen will be a major consideration when looking at Freeview LCD TVs. Whilst it is tempting to go for the biggest TV possible, it is rarely a wise decision. The size of the TV should be determined by the distance you watch it from. This is because the resolution of many larger screen TVs will be worse relative to smaller screens (there will be the same number of pixels spread over a bigger area). This would be fine if you sat a long way away, but will appear worse if you sit close. When you consider how much more expensive the larger screens are, it is certainly not worth it.
