Freeview TVs Buyers Guide
The digital switchover has already begun and within a few years the last analogue transmission will be turned off. If you haven't already got a digital TV then you will need to get one very soon. There are two ways to convert to digital and receive TV for free, either a set-top box or a TV with a digital tuner built in. TVs with digital built-in are often referred to as Freeview TVs, as they allow you to access the Freeview TV channels instantly through an ordinary TV aerial.
Although at first you may be reluctant to buy an entirely new TV simply to get digital (for either financial or environmental waste reasons), you may find a reason to buy a new TV instead of converting your old TV using a set-top box. Freeview TVs have many advances aside from just the new digital receiver technology. For instance, if you have an old CRT TV then you will see that the new Freeview TVs are much slimmer than your old set and will give you back some of your living space. Picture quality has also advanced in recent years and you will see that most Freeview TVs are Full-HD or HD Ready, meaning they can show TV and films in high definition to give you a much better viewing experience. High definition is also having an impact on home cinema, with Blu-Ray discs replacing DVDs. You may find that if you keep your old TV you will not be able to connect a Blu-Ray player as they require an HDMI port, which your old TV is unlikely to have. Many Freeview TVs have a built-in digital recorder, so you can record TV programs directly to a hard-drive inside the TV. This replaces your VCR with much improved functionality and quality of recording.
If you are worried about the environmental impact of discarding a working TV then you should be aware that new TVs are more energy efficient now, so your new TV will save you money and reduce your carbon footprint, especially when you compare it to your old TV plus the set-top box you will need to get digital. A major practical benefit is the reduction in the number of remote controls you will need, as a digital set-top box would mean having an additional remote to juggle.
