Frost Free Freezers Buyers Guide
Frost free freezers offer an excellent solution to the accumulation of ice that has a tendency to build up within traditional freezers. This ice not only reduces the space available and makes opening shelves more awkward, but it can also lower the performance of the appliance when it comes to keeping food frozen. Historically, the only way to remove this ice deposit was to find a sufficient number of cool-bags or boxes for the groceries whilst the unplugged freezer could warm sufficiently to melt it away, usually leaving the household owner with a flooded floor to deal with.
Utilising a built in thermostat and heater a frost free freezer will effectively defrost itself every two hours by removing the ice from the coils where it builds up first. After a certain amount of time has passed, or when the sensor reaches a certain temperature, the heat is turned off, keeping your food cool and your freezer frost-free.
The clever design of frost free freezers results in excellent energy efficiency in most models despite this extra heating and cooling. Check the label as you research potential models to ensure your electricity bills won't be too high, an 'A' rating is the most efficient although some manufacturers use slightly different grading systems including 'AAA'. You won't struggle to find a wide selection of highly rated freezers.
The benefits of owning a frost free freezer are clear but what's the drawback? The extra technology present in these appliances does make them more expensive than their rivals. Don't rush into purchasing the first model that takes your fancy as, with a bit of research, you're likely to spot a better bargain. Be aware that although you are likely to spend more up front it is likely that you'll regain some of that due to the excellent energy efficiency on offer.
You'll find both well known brand names and unknown providers making frost free freezers in a variety of different shapes, sizes and appearances so no matter what you're searching for there's bound to be something to suit. Finally, always look at the long term costs of ownership including the length of the warranty and the likely costs of servicing and parts: a cheaper appliance is not always cheaper to own.
