Garage Equipment Buyers Guide
The phrase garage equipment covers a vast range of equipment that you might need. Indeed many garages are a veritable Aladdin's cave of tools and other equipment, some of which enjoys regular use and other pieces which haven't seen the light of day since the fall of the Berlin Wall. So what are you likely to need and actually use?
Clearly if you are intending on doing any work in your garage or on your home in general then you will need tools. Most people assemble tool kits over a life time on a need-driven basis. That said, for new home owners or perhaps even as a house warming present for others, there are some excellent general purpose tool kits now available which will include many of the common tools you are likely to need.
For the serious DIY enthusiast and indeed anyone planning to work on the car, one or more tool boxes will be useful for any tools you plan to carry around. For those tools needed only in the garage, a decent tool chest or one of the modern plastic cupboards with flexible interior layouts will be ideal.
If you are contemplating working on your own or indeed other people's vehicles safely and effectively, there are a further set of essential items of garage equipment to consider. The jack included with your car for changing the odd burst tyre isn't suitable or safe for prolonged jacking of a vehicle. As such, you will probably want to consider a decent hydraulic jack with a load rating suited to any vehicle on which you plan to work. You will also need a set of sturdy axle stands to support the car once it is jacked up - NEVER work under a vehicle unless it is correctly supported. Specialist mechanic's tools may also be needed ranging from Torx wrenches; oil filter grips; spark plug spanners; battery chargers and testers; and a myriad of other electrical and mechanical tools. For the really serious car mechanic, you may even need compressors; air guns; spray guns; engine hoists and so forth.
Finally, other things that might be useful garage equipment include a sturdy workbench with a decent vice, for securing items you will be working on. Ultimately, the garage equipment you will need is entirely dependent on what you plan to be doing in there. Always opt for good quality tools from a reputable brand and of course ensure that you have AND USE the relevant safety equipment including masks, goggles and other items of suitably rated and designed safety gear.
