Green Day Buyers Guide
Green Day were formed in 1987 and are comprised of three band members, lead guitarist and vocalist Joe Armstrong, bass player, Mile Dirnts and drummer, Tre Cool. Initially they were part of a punk rock scene in Berkeley, California and their early releases earned Green Day a solid following. They managed to alienate some of their fan base by signing to a major independent label, Lookout! Records.
Dookie, their first album was released in 1994 and was a big success for a new band. The album sold over ten million copies in the USA alone and over fifteen million worldwide. They were widely credited with reviving the mainstream interest in punk music, along with Offspring and Rancid, two other California based bands.
Despite the success of the first album, the next three albums, Insomniac, Nimrod and Warning were less successful, although they still managed to go either gold or platinum in the United States. However, the band's next album, American Idiot found the band appealing to a whole new set of younger fans. Selling over five million copies in the USA, the album was generally regarded as the best album of that year. Green Day released their eighth album, 21st Century Breakdown in May 2009.
With over twenty million sales in the USA, Green Day have become one of the biggest bands of recent years. They have won a total of three Grammies, Best Rock Album for American Idiot and also the Record of the Year for their single Boulevard of Broken dreams.
