Guitar Strings Buyers Guide
Guitar strings are a vital part of the backup stock that guitarists need to keep with them whenever playing. There are various types of guitar strings and it is purely a personal preference, however, each of them have their own features.
Strings are usually made from a steel core, although some strings may also have cores made of silk, nylon or Kevlar. Guitar strings come in different gauges; therefore it is also possible for you to choose whether you prefer light or heavy gauge strings from one of up to ten different gauges available. Lighter gauge strings are often better if you are a lead guitarist, whilst medium gauge guitar strings are better for rhythm guitar. Many guitarists, however, customise their guitars by mixing and matching the various options. The easiest option for beginners is to simply to buy a complete set rather than individual strings, unless you already know the gauge and type of your preferred guitar strings.
The simplest strings are round wound. These are wound in a tight coil around a central core. They tend to be less expensive, but may wear more easily and can also encourage wear on the fret board due to contact with the fret board. Flat wound strings have a lower profile making them easier to play. They also produce less of a squeak on the fret board than the round wound variants. However, they can produce a rather less "bright" sound.
Half wound strings are a combination of round wound and flat wound strings. They feel much like a flat wound string, but squeak less on the fret board. There are also hexcore strings which are tightly wound strings wound around an inner hexagonal core. This can solve some of the problems which players experience with round wound strings in that the wound string rotates around the inner round core.
