Integrated Fridges Buyers Guide
Integrated fridges offer a space saving and aesthetically pleasing way in which to effectively hide your fridge within a kitchen cabinet. The models on offer come in a variety of different shapes, offering sufficient choice to fit within almost any kitchen.
Aside from the availability of a matching kitchen panel to mount on the front of the fridge, the considerations for integrated fridges are much the same as for any other fridge. However, for any integrated appliance, the external dimensions are of even greater importance than with free standing appliances. Most modern kitchens are designed and built with very little margin for error. All three dimensions must be accurately measured: height, width and depth. Although most models come in widely accepted standard widths such as 60cm, there are small variances between them which could make the difference between a fit and an expensive mistake.
Since integrated fridges almost invariably come at a premium price when compared with their free standing counterparts, cost is also an important factor. Manufacturers continue to try to differentiate their offerings by adding additional features and functions, some of which will have little practical use in individual households. The best advice here is to stick to the basics: energy efficiency (ideally 'A' rated), manufacturer reputation, internal capacity, a flexible internal layout with removable shelves and compartments (also vital for cleaning) and thermostatic control.
You will also need to consider whether your new integrated fridge needs to have an ice compartment. Since many households now have a separate freezer, this may be redundant although if your freezer is located in the garage, an ice compartment can be handy for ice cubes. When it comes to choosing a specific brand, much is down to personal preference, with many people preferring to stick to the same appliance brand throughout the kitchen. There is, however, a balancing act between the premium costs of the higher end brands versus the additional functionality or lower costs on offer from lesser known brands. Since integrated fridges are, by definition, not visible, there may be greater flexibility than with other appliances.
With so many different manufacturers now offering integrated fridges you should find that you are spoilt for choice as you do your research.
