Jewel Cases Buyers Guide

Jewel cases are the standard way to house and protect optical discs, particularly CDs. They are made from plastic, which although it does a good job of protecting the CD from knocks and scratches, is not particularly strong itself and is vulnerable to being cracked or broken, especially around the hinges. When you are purchasing Jewel cases you should try to pick the sturdiest. You obviously won't be able to test the cases to destruction, but the key area to examine is the ring that holds the CD at its centre. This is a particularly vulnerable area and the design of this feature will give you a good idea of how well the Jewel case will last. If it consists of some flimsy-looking teeth, then best find another case. Remember you have to push down on this area to release the CD, so you need something flexible but strong.

As for types of Jewel cases, the main options are whether you want thin, single-type cases, or slightly thicker album-type cases. The album-type cases are essential if you have a thick booklet to include, as the single-type cases will only hold one or two sheets. Of course, if you have two discs to store in a single case then you will have to buy double-CD cases, which are obviously somewhat more expensive. There are several ways that a double-CD case can be designed, so you will have some options when choosing. There is no proven best mechanism, so just choose the one that best meets your own requirements, or the one you are most comfortable with.

Some Jewel cases have a transparent tray that holds the CD and some have an opaque tray. If you are going to include any artwork or advertising underneath the CD that is visible when the CD is removed, then you obviously need to buy entirely transparent cases. However, this is an area where you can save money if you don't have any artwork on that surface. Whether transparent or opaque, it is best to make sure that the CD tray itself is removable so you can include artwork or advertising on the back cover as this is where people will expect there to be something. The only case this may be a problem with is single-type cases. All album-type cases should have a removable tray.
