Packard BellEasynote R4650I`ve had this laptop for near on six years, and it`s only just getting weak now. I bought it originally to play video games like Counter Strike and Day of Defeat, but it lasted al the way through WoW The Burning Crusade. The problem I`m having with it now is it freezes sometimes, and when I restart it it displays an Intel M chipset logo instead of a Centrino Technology logo. This is ok, as when it DOES display the Centrino logo, the laptops wireless works but it crashes again soon after. When it decides to use the Intel M chip, everything works except the wireless. Any suggestions? a_thing@live.com.au Keeping in mind 6 years old is an ancient laptop, lol. In that time I`ve never formatted or taken it in for repairs. Also, I`m building a new gaming rig anyway, but i want to give this to my brother 5 out of 5Fryzie25/03/2009 15:38:03

ToshibaL300-13RHi I purchased this laptop on offer, I paid #405 and got this laptop deal- toshiba l300-13r, a hp printer, laptop bag mouse and usb stick all thrown in for free. I thought its very cheap therefore wasnt expecting an excellent performance product but to be honest I think I have got the best deal. As this laptop is top spec and very easy to use. I use it daily and have not experienced any problems til date. I would definatly recommend this product to all customers out there. 5 out of 5Anon17/12/2008 09:08:10

ToshibaSatellite A200-27UThe Toshiba Satellite Pro A200-27U is a sturdy, well-built PC, which, at the time of writing, has a sizeable hard drive at 160GB, which means plenty of storage room. The PC also features Wi fi, four USB ports, one firewall port, S/Video and VGA connection. The screen is bright and offers excellent resolution, which means videos look very good on this. The speakers are not the loudest, but the sound quality is excellent, and if you have external speakers, this machine sure could produce some fantastic sounds. There is a memory card reader, which is quite a standard but useful feature, as transfer of media directly to and from the memory card is a lot faster than plugging in the unit in question. Bluetooth would have been cool, but I suppose a dongle only costs about ten quid so it is an addition you can easily make. The keyboard is excellent, with lots of springy feedback. I actually want to sit down and type on this, since it feels so natural and responsive. Way to go Toshiba! The machine runs on Vista Home Premium, which is a very slick and user-friedndly operating system, and although I doubt it would be Microsoft`s most popular operating system, they really did try to make the interface more logical and Windows easier to use. Vista feels more secure than XP, and although warning signs may be annoying for some, they do make you think twice. This notebook also features Dolby Sound Room, which, for a unit under #500, is a terrific bonus. The software, once activated, is able to relicate a 5.1 Surround sound environment when you have the headphones on. Of course, it is most noticeable when you play a 5.1 encoded DVD. At other times, it doesn`t make too much difference, but my ultra expensive Sony Vaio does not offer this, so watching films using headphones is really cool. As for performance, this PC truly delivers. It is equipped with an Intel Centrino Core Duo 2 processor, so the machine can handle memory intensive tasks quite well. The machine has managed to encode camcorder videos, as I used the internet applying for jobs with no slowdown. The machine is also fairly good for games, with a 128MB ATI graphics processor. Of course, there is no point in pretending this will give you the kind of gaming experience high end PCs would, but it is quite good, and although the latest 3D games do not look their best (and neither perform as spectacularly as they would on machines with some super fast graphics processors etc), for most people not entirely obsessed with games, will find this computer satisfactory. It is highly unlikely that gamers would be looking for a PC at this price raange for games, since they typically cost way more. Overall, this PC looks stylish, is very well built, features a lot of good connectivity options, and performs very well in a variety of intensive situations. I have used many Toshiba PCs in the Satellite range over the years and always found them to be very underrated machines with a lot of capability, and of all the ones I have used, at this price range this notebook has impressed me very much. Sure, there are higher end laptops available, with Blu Ray burners, HDMI output, and touchscreens, but for this price, this is a quality product, and it will, without a doubt, last a very long time. It comes highly recommended. 5 out of 5Toshiba provides a perfect computing solution26/09/2008 07:30:35

SONYVAIO VGN-FJ3S/WExcellent reliability, quiet operation, had mine for 2 years now, used the hell out of it daily without any problems whatsoever. TOSHIBAEquium M70-337I`ve purchased 2 of these in the last year both have the same fault the Gpu overheats & the system blue gives a graphics driver error (blue screen) toshiba know the problem exists & how easy it is to fix ( less than 30 mins) at a true cost for bits at less than £10. Great for me as I buy machines in new condition for a fraction of the cost. The gpu has a flimsy thin heat sink with little to no thermal paste on it & when it over heats it expands away from the gpu. Solution make a thin alloy shim to fit under it 30mmX30mm put some good quality thermal paste on it. (I use artic silver 5) best on the market, I always do the same to the cpu(might as well while your in there) works better than ever for ever. I purchased a alloy door push plate for £1.99 from B&Q cuts up easy & will do to fix loads more. Terry Sim 5 out of 5Terry Sim13/05/2008 18:29:10

ACERTM4051LMII have had this laptop for about 3 years now and as far as I am concerned it is an excellent value for money item. I take it everywhere I go and it is reliable, robust and easy to use. I have had no problems with it at all and therefore can say nothing bad about it. It is not too expensive and not to cheap so I believe you get what you pay for. I would definately recommend this laptop. More for personal use than for business. 5 out of 5Ellie Stewart ( Love Spirit UK)02/05/2008 19:04:52

SONYVGN-S5M/SLove my vaio. All except all the software that you don`t need. It`s lightweight, stylish and compact. Ideal if you still want to feel your legs after having it on your knee. The screen is brilliant and bright. The keys are large enough to see and easy to the touch. Love going on club vaio for the wicked desktop backgrounds. Would recommend to buy to anyone looking for an easy to use light weight compact laptop. Bad points: The battery has died on mine after just over a year of light use. Also does not hold the charge as long as it says it does. 5 out of 5mickyp150420/01/2008 17:38:13

HEWLETT PACKARDHP nc6220Pros:I have had this laptop for about a year. as a student, I have found it ideal for almost everything I have needed to do so far. Runs vista, xp, and ubuntu flawlessly. world processing is great, it can play a few games as well, but not very well. cons:the nc6220 is a poor choice if you have any photo and video editing to do or if you like gaming. the intel integrated graphics card is not powerful enough to handle many newer programs. halo for pc runs ok, but heats up the laptop very fast. battlefield 2 does not run at all and america`s army is so slow (<5 fps) that it is impossible to play. i have adobe photoshop and premiere cs3 installed currently. they both work, but run somewhat slowly and are difficult to use because of this. i cannot export to dvd in premiere even when i plug in my hp dvd740 external burner for some reason. overall it is a fine machine but definitely a business notebook - no games or photo/video editing at all. i recommend highly if you do not need these functions 5 out of 5starpenguin20/12/2007 13:04:31

SONYVAIO PCGZ1XSPThis note book is beautiful and fully loaded . I have real trouble now that dual core have arrived as I cant see any reason to change it even though every one says I should because ... I have installed vista too, which has made a beautiful machine more beautiful and even more difficult to trade up. The design in my oppinion is unmatched by its rivals and for shear style its worth th price. Note I have added an extra 512 ram to make this beauty even smoother. 5 out of 5ricardo21/08/2007 18:22:35

SONYVGN-A417Mgot A417-s, had it for nearly 2 years and it still copes with high demand games. Had a new LCD, hard drive AND dvd drive, and it overheated a few times due to excessive dust which hat do be cleaned from the heatpipe however still this machine is as beatifull as it is powerfull. The 17` LCD x-black screen displays video and picture with much more vibrant and bright colours than you would expect from a laptop. The battery life if short (approx 1hr) if you have it set to performance and about 1hr 50 mins when have it set to battery life however batteries do deteriorate on any make or model. I would give a 4 on the grounds that its been back at the repair center 4 times although VAIO LINK have fixed the problem without fuss and usually without delay so it gets a 5. In a sentance basically VAIO make the best laptops around no doubt about it; no other laptops are finnished to the quality of a VAIO and although some say the software that comes with it isn`t up to scratch, I disagree with those some as you get a lot more or a user friendly, useful and entertaining and downright luxurious experience. 5 out of 52142playa17/07/2007 12:29:40

EI SYSTEMS4419Purchased this machine in 2004. The battery went after about 15 months (probably my own fault), but have had no problems at all. Had to restore the system once (again, my own fault), but it all went smoothly. The number of USB`s on it are excellent and it manages to run my USB wireless network, mouse, printer, clip drive, bluetooth all at the same time with no problems. I`m very pleased with it, and although am being pestered to do an upgrade .... I`m reluctant. If it aint broke, I won`t fix it! TOSHIBAEQUIUM M70-173This laptop is very good. The laptop has a quality build if a little heavy. The battery life is very good in comparision to others I have used including dell`s, advents and hewlett packards. Price is good for features contained and laptop looks good wherever you want to use it. The wide screen makes it a good media laptop a that can be used in living room. AcerAspire 5512WLMIPros: Very good Laptop for your money!

Powerful, good for watching DVDs and good enough for most games, TV Tuner.

Cons: Case a little tacky, but is fine. Screen gives a bit of glare

This is my first laptop, and I am quiet amazed at it! Overview: This a great laptop, it looks great, and it great! It isn`t very noisy, it is quiet powerful, keyboard is good, though does go in a bit. The touchpad isn`t bad, it has a 4 way scroll on it, which is good. The graphics is good, 128MB ATI X700, and for watching videos, it is amazing, with the 15.4` crystal bright widescreen display, it gives a crisp, sharp display. The TV tuner is good, though where I live, I can`t get great signal. Battery life is good. Wireless is good.

Multimedia: This laptop is great for multimedia. Acer`s arcade software is great software, when you run it, it looks a bit like Windows Media Centre edition, it is dead easy to use. 2 remote controls come with this Laptop as well, one tiny 15 button remote, which you can store in the PCMCIA slot, and a 48 button remote, which it dead thin! They are designed for the Acer arcade software, but can be used in other programs like Windows Media Player. The laptop`s built in TV card is great! You can use it as a Digital or Analogue tuners. The `DVB-T Signal Up` antenna is good, you can put it onto the top of your display. This Laptop comes with some connectors so you can play and record and burn onto DVD anything from AV or S-video connections EG you can put a VCR into it, and transfer it onto a DVD. The Fn keys are fine. The video chip set is very good, it plays DVDs perfectly! And games are great on it! It will handle most games smoothly. The soundcard in the Laptop is very good considering it is a laptop, the speakers go fairly loud, and don`t loose much sound quality, though I would advise that you have a set of speakers at your desk, as the sound output is much better than what the speakers can give off. I use a 2.1 speaker system, and the sound is great with them.

General: The 80GB HDD does me fine, I know that I will never fill that up. The HDD is partitioned into 2. I must say, the Hard disc drive is very fast! I didn`t expect this! 512MB of RAM also does me, but you may wish to upgrade this if you use up a lot of RAM! The Laptop is very easy to set up, and the operating system is the newest version, which I like.

Communication with other devices: The build in 802.11b/g Wireless LAN is good. I am getting `excellent` signal when connected to my wireless ADSL modem/router. Bluetooth is easy enough to set up, haven’t really used it yet though, just tested it.

Drives and ports: The CD room speed isn`t amazingly fast, but will do. I have not yet had a chance to try burning any DVDs, but it can`t be bad, as it has a DVD-+RW Dual layer drive. USB devices are recognised fast, and can put things on there and take it off fast.

Portability: This Laptop is more of a desktop replacement, as it does weigh 3KGs! But this isn`t really that heavy, I was thinking this was more heavier than it actually was until I got it out the box. It is 3.9cms thick, this doesn`t look at thick, because of it`s great looks! The battery life is stated as 3.5hrs, you can get 4.1 hrs out of it, but this would just be looking at the screen. The software that comes with it, `Acer ePower management`, is very good, You can adjust things to get a better battery life. If you are doing something like word processing, you could get around 3.7hrs battery out of it, which is pretty impressive, considering how powerful it is! If you are watching a DVD, you might be able to get 2hrs out of it, but I am not sure to be honest! I have not tried it out quiet yet!

Software included: A lot of good software is included in this: OS: Microsoft Windows XP Home. Other things: Microsoft works, Acer arcade, Acer management programmes, IE: epower management, Internet Explorer, some games, and some other things like the usual paint...

Great Laptop for your money! I would recommend this laptop to anyone! Acer is defiantly the way to go when it comes to laptops!

That has to be fantastic uptime and i give it a thrashing, I am a heavy user throwing it in and out of cars boats planes and have never used a carry case and have operated it in multi function modes for near 15hrs a day 7 days a week. Have it chocker full of photos and mpegs and have an online card using almost continuous. Thanx to the makers have certainly had my moneys worth. 5 out of 5dexterkeithmadden@Hotmail.com05/06/2006 12:11:44

TOSHIBAA80-132I Bought this product as a result of me having the same one on hire while my acer travelmate 240 was being repaired but i never went back to my acer i went out and bought a toshiba a80 my self they are so good the only thing that i wouldnt recommend is that you get a universal ac adapter to run it as a spare ac as they dont seem to charge the battery up other wise everything is great but that was me trying to save money but it dosn`t always work out that way always buy original parts 5 out of 5karl05/06/2006 12:07:52

HEWLETT PACKARDDV5016EAGreat laptop for the money. Not the fastest, but the Gig of RAM helps it to tick along and avoid too much swapping to and from disk. I`ve been using it with OpenOffice - a presentation, two spreadsheets and a word processing document open at the same time without any difficulties. The screen is terrific and being widescreen is good for movies (though not for using VNC to control standard 1280x1024 screens elsewhere). Battery life is about 2 hours - which is just adequate. It comes loaded with iTunes and the speakers (made by Altec Lansing) are not too shabby for a laptop. Certainly fine for listening to while surfing. It is big, and definitely take two hands to pick up, but for £560 I`m not expecting an ultra-portable. I`m happy with this. I wanted a cheap lappie, predominantly for surfing, and cheap enough that if my baby girl used it as a step or parking place for her ice cream, I wouldn`t go bankrupt. This HP fills that requirement. Positive surprise: crystal clear screen Negative surprises: bulk, lack of PCMCIA slot, lack of PS/2 socket for an external mouse. 5 out of 5Edwin03/05/2006 08:42:42

HEWLETT PACKARDDV5094EAHaving bought this laptop and finding very little help in the way of reviews for this laptop, I`ve written this one to help other buyers out there looking for a moderately low priced laptop. There`s as much detail as I can put down, sorry if its a little disorganised!

I bought this one after having my other laptop, a HP dv1600, so I wanted a very similar model for as cheap as I could find. In comparison the dv5094 is slightly bigger, 15.4 inch screen which is very good quality with probably better viewing angles (based mainly on the fact that I`ve rarely had that case of having to adjust my screen constantly to get a better view). Its specs seemed pretty good value for money, with an apparent 2Ghz Turion processor, which is moderately fast, one note though, on the Control panel -> System page, it actually states a 1.6Ghz processor, which I -was- worried about, considering its low price and I`m assuming it`s probably down to how Windows calculates the speed. The RAM is 1024Mb as stated. I doubt this will run many high-spec games, it has tiny moments of lag on Fifa 2004, but that could be any of a number of things. To be honest, I didn`t buy it to play lots of games or anything particularly stressing so for standard office/home use its pretty good. Its also extremely quiet when the fan or cd-rom isn`t running, incredibly so. Those are probably all the downsides to this really, the look is quite nice with blue lit buttons, the lid fits snugly (which was a slight problem with the dv1600), there isn`t Quickplay which allows the laptop to boot instantly to play dvd`s, but there are still buttons for it (which perhaps means it can be installed, though I have yet to try), the speakers are a little better than normal laptop speakers and can go quite loud and there are plenty of ports for memory cards (sd, xd,MMC etc) pc cards, s-video out, and I find three usb ports adequate. Power outlet is on the right side at the back which is slightly odd (personally).

There`s no bluetooth and no remote control, compared with the dv1600, although there is a infrared receiver so it responds to my old remote. The DVD/CD-RW is not that fast, but adequate.

Overall, its a very good laptop for the price (£750 with £50 discount from Comet). Its better than the Compaq 5094 which is essentially the same internally, due to all the extra tassels like memory card slots, quicklaunch buttons etc for the same price. There is a slight quibble with the processor speed, but for the kind of price you`re paying, its not that big a deal esp seeing if it does turn out to be only 1.6Ghz. Well worth the price, probably one of the best laptops for around £800, as long as you don`t expect to be doing processor-heavy tasks 24-7.

TOSHIBAM50-216Bought this laptop a couple of weeks ago having almost purchased a laptop on several ocassions over the previous year.

For the cost it is excellent.

Decent processor speed & memory, very light and fantastic screen (especially for excel users like myself).

For `non-work` uses, it`s ok. I have played Pro Evo Soccer on the machine with little discernable difference to my much more powerful desktop. Obviously, the integrated graphics have limits, Call of Duty 2 was way beyond its means, but more many games it will do you fine.

Packard BellEasynote E2316I got this notebook in May 2005 and have had no major problems with it. The two gripes that I`ve got with the machine is the abysmal battery life (only 90 mins) and the slight overheating problem (due to the fan being mounted underneath the bottom of the machine), which to be fair is only noticed after about 30 mins. The can easily be cured by the use of a notebook cooler (£19.99 in Maplin). Apart from this, it is not a bad machine to use. 5 out of 5Paul Wilson13/03/2006 10:02:01

Packard BellEASYNOTE L4014L4014 - Absolutely horrible service from PC World. DVD was not reliable...and you can not reach a human body for repairs after you`ve dropped it off. Took possession of it and customer service said they would email me when repaired. Anyone want to venture a guess where they will email me if they are holding my computer. Will never purchase another Packard Bell nor purchase anything from PC World again. Twice is my limit. Mad Dog Englishman 5 out of 5Anon27/02/2006 11:59:11

TOSHIBAL20-197I recently bought myself a Toshiba L20-197 and found it very good and the only gripe is the 1hr 30 mins battery life which could have been much better but for a budget laptop it does everything that my Sony Vaio RV302 Desktop does but is much more portable and the ATI graphics card is slightly better than the Nvidia one on my other PC and i prefer the bundled Toshiba software that comes on the accompanying CD which is much more superior to the bundled software that came as part of the Sony Vaio Syctem Discs so i would give the Toshiba L20-197 Laptop a star rating of 4/5 maybe 5 if the battery had a longer life. 5 out of 5Richard18/02/2006 09:37:31

SONYVGN-FS315ZThis machine has performed flawlessly for me ever since its purchase a few months ago. It comes in a small stylish package and packs enough punch to deal with some fairly tough applications. The best thing about it has to be the gorgeous screen. Excellent for watching movies and playing games and very easy on the eyes during extended periods of word processing.

GATEWAY8550GBI brought my Gateway 8550GB when it was first released. I thought it was great value for money. I have not had any problems with it at all. I mainly use it for personal use, but also use it when i am away on work. The screen is really good and is great for watching DVDs. The performance is also great and with 100gb hard drive is really good for storing music, videos and all the programs i use, and i still have room for loads more. I don`t really play a lot of games on it but the ones that i have tried run really well. Full size keyboard is very useful, as well as the DVD Writer, and being wireless it makes connecting onto the internet very easy. Overall i think the Gateway 8550GB is a great bit of kit and is very good value for money and would recommend it to anyone with a budget of £1000 to spend on a laptop. 5 out of 5Neil Curtis18/12/2005 16:14:24

ACERTM2413LMI own one of these laptops and I can quite honestly say it is one of the best buys I have ever made. I think that it is well worth £399.99. The battery lasts ages, it is fast, it has plenty of storage space and it can writhe CDs and DVDs, unlike a lot of desktop PCs and laptops in this price range. In fact, I think this laptop should be raised from entry level to mid level. If you are thinking of buying a laptop and you have a budget of £400 this is the one. Also, this is not one of those web exclusive deals where it is only cheap online, like me, you can just travel down to your local comet store and buy one straight away.

I recommend buying the Belkin home surge protector with this laptop to prevent pixel burnout.

Thanks for reading, Nick
