QualcastPower-Trak 3400I have a 2002 P-T 34 (rather than 3400, although the same machine) It has only just stopped after 7 years continual use. Reason - the dried grass accummulated in the motor housing and overheated the motor. Best mower we`ve ever had. Does everything the other reviewers say: Cuts well, to the edge, wet or dry/long or short, relatively lightweight and manouverable. I`m getting another one. 5 out of 5NeedsAmower22/07/2009 18:12:27

FLYMOTurbo Lite 330I love my new turbo lite. It`s light and nippy and I mowed the lawn much faster than with my old, bigger one. It does struggle a bit if the grass is long, but as long as the blade is on its highest setting, it does fine. Easy to put together and it has a metal blade. Great stuff! 5 out of 5Nursewhen02/10/2008 08:10:11

BoschROTAK 34 CMine landed today from Amazon (£89.95). Easy to assemble and it does the job perfectly. I had some pretty long wet grass on the back lawn (about 60cm and laying flat) The Rotak handled it with consumate ease. Grass box is easy to empty and it certainly beats the heck out of a hover mower which I`ve been using for years. I`d definitely recommend this mower to anyone regardless of whether they have long wet grass or carpet grass. There`s enough height adjustment to cut any lawn. Highly recommended. 5 out of 5Steve (Yorkshire)27/08/2008 17:46:08

FLYMOHover Compact 350 (EX)excellent value for money from argos as my last flymo compact 300 micro lasted well over 4 years mowing 3 gardens until it decidede to die about 6.30pm the other night,it was a rush buy to get just a cheap mower from homebase but walked next door to argos and found this bargain, same price as there own budget range and very easy to use,you can buy replacement blades from b & q and the belts you can get advice from www.flymo.com.for the money i would not buy anything else, lets face it, if you are only going to mow a lawn why spend hundreds if you can get away with 60 quid. 5 out of 5me26/04/2008 12:55:58

McCullochLawnmac 3540PDHad the above model for four years now, & haven`t had a problem with it until now. The engine is starting to fail me & once started it soon dies. Seems to be giving up the ghost.Changed oil & petrol, Spark plug is sound. It was a great lawnmower & i`m sentimental about it. It has served my wife & i well, until now.... Looking at purchasing a replacement lawnmower, but at £149.99 for the same model seems a little silly. 5 out of 5Sandy15/06/2007 12:59:09

BoschROTAK 34 CA great mower with a very powerful motor now 1400w (previous models had 1300w). Forget about heavy petrol mowers that are difficult to start after winter and always seem to run out of fuel at the wrong moment, this is the one to get. It cuts both long and wet grass with ease. As at March 2007 its selling at Homebase for £99.99 and worth every penny. (I must be getting old, talking about mowers!!!) 5 out of 5RTFishall19/03/2007 21:59:52

FlymoVision Compact 330... it will be easier to manoever, collect better, and probably cut more evenly, too. And you dont have to pick bits of grass out of its air intakes. OK, goats cant hover, but as other reviewers have pointed out, once the grass box has anything it, neither can this. You wont get the little window either, which is probably a plus since your nose has to be touching it to see anything. Seriously, dont buy one of these. I wish I hadnt.4 out of 5Amazon Reviewer16/09/2008 01:01:01

QualcastPower-Trak 3400This mower got a good review in Which so I bought one last year and am really pleased I did. It cuts far better than my hover mower and is therefore quicker (result!) though being wheeled, not as highly manouverable. It is very easily adjustable (about 12 heights) and will even cope with wet grass no problem. I tend to cut high (about 3 notches up) then run over at the lowest height to give a good finish. Emptying the grass box is very easy and the full width power handle means you can use your left or right hand to keep it powered up. The only drawback is the handle is connected to the main body by the cable so storage and carrying can be a bit awkward but Ive worked around it by splitting the cable and putting a socket in it (I used an orange Permaplug - cheaply available from B&Q). This is easy enough but not recommended if youre not confident with electrical wiring. I would happily recommend this for flat-ish small/medium gardens. I think this is very similar,if not identical, to the Bosch Rotak 34c (34 stands for 34cm width) so check around before buying....4 out of 5Amazon Reviewer09/03/2008 01:01:01

BoschAMR32FAlthough the construction doesnt appear very robust, it performs remarkably well. Trying to manually rake a lawn of any size is back-breaking work & therefore this electric lawn rake / scarifier works a treat. The grass collection box is small and does require frequent emptying. It is suprising how much moss & thatch that normal lawnmowing isnt able to remove. After a couple of years use in both spring and autumn(also using feed & weed granules), my lawns are totally transformed.4 out of 5Amazon Reviewer03/03/2008 01:01:01

McCullochLawnmac 3540PI`ve had one of these for 5 years now and It has been really trouble free. The only issue I have now is finding a replacement blade as my one is blunt!! Putting the box together took like 20 secs, not sure why someone found that difficult?? The wheel height adjuster is an issue but I`ve had mine on the same height since I bought it. The box will fall off if you tip the nose of the mower up in the air too sharply so that the back of the box drags on the ground, but it has never just dropped off. However, if you want nice bold stripes on your lawn the mower just wont deliver. Get one with a drum roller at the back, but you`ll probably need to spend alot more 4 out of 5Anon11/06/2007 09:28:42

BoschROTAK 34 CI purchased the Bosch after a string of Flymos, none of which lasted long. It is so much better! It cuts well, it is much easier to adjust the height of cut and this is one grass box that actually collects the grass. It is also much easier to push and that is important to me. Downsides? Its rather bulky and although it is remarkably light the Flymo was easier to get around the few fiddly bits around beds. But I managed and itll probably be easier when I get more used to it.4 out of 5Amazon Reviewer12/04/2007 01:01:01

BoschROTAK 34 CBe careful when buying this model - I liked my neighbours rotak 34 he bought from B&Q but they had none left so I went to homebase - the price was the same but what I didn`t notice was that my neighbours had ROTAK 34CE on the box mine had ROTAK 34. HondaIZY 46cmHaving used the Honda for a month now I am so pleased I paid the bit extra to get a classier mower. MTDRH125/92BI bought this product from B&Q in their sale as it was a good price. I used it for two years without any problems but then it threw the main cutter belt. I also had trouble getting a belt from the MTD recommended service agents but they did tell me about the mod kit which they supplied free and which took 20 minutes to fit. I don`t know if it solved the problem because I didn`t think two years on one belt was a problem? A replacement belt was easily obtained from my local plant hire company, lateral thinking there! The machine does struggle with very long and wet grass, however its not a rough cut paddock topper, its a lawn tractor, and for that use it is excellent. The grass collection box does fill quite quickly but thats the same with all machines. 5 out of 5Stephen11/08/2009 09:25:14

QUALCASTEasi-Trak 320It isnt often one buys a product and can say that it does everything it says on the box - and better. With this mower I believe thats true. I can honestly say that for the ordinary small to medium lawn this is the best I have ever used - by a mile. The grass box is an excellent feature and can be latched-on to the mower easily without any fiddling. It can be pushed with remarkably little effort compared to a hover mower and cuts not strangles the lawn before depositing the grass, leaves and small debris into the grass box. It is that good that it could actually be used as a lawn rake. Medium seems to be the best all-round height cut setting and will also cut slightly damp grass without motor stress. With the handle permanently attached it was too big for my small garden shed so I fitted a garden power connnector between the mower and the handle and simply slot the handle in and connect the lead as and when. Perfect. 5 out of 5Amazon Reviewer31/05/2008 01:01:01

QUALCASTEclipse 320As these products have a 5yr parts warrantee & 2yr labour guarantee, the good gentleman could have had Qualcast effect the repair for free. UnbrandedPower-Trak 4000I bought this lawnmower today and have just given it its first go at my beast of a lawn. It was really good and so far I`m very impressed. After having a flymo hover mower(now defuncked) this one was a joy because of the wheels. I`ve no vested interest in qualcast the company but spent a couple of evenings reviewing mowers on the web and this one was recommended in a couple of places so I wanted to spend 5 minutes sharing my view. I took a chance and bought it today(£99) and my 100 ft garden hasn`t looked as tidy for donkeys. Only word of warning, watch the big stones on your grass, they can give the blade a real knock. MountfieldSP530Superb mower, cut a large lawn in half the time my Qualcast 18` mower took. Dealt with slope of lawn and holes very well. Extemely impressed and at £233 from B&Q a bargin, has the metal frame over the blade, some have pastic. Latest version has the RV150 engine which according to Mountfield themselves is easier to start than the Briggs and Stratton. Should have bought this mower first rather than the very poor Qualcast cylinder mower. Doesn`t do stripes but its a family garden so doesn`t matter, wheels drive uphill rather than a roller type of drive that just slipped on wet grass. 5 out of 5Pete03/05/2006 08:42:18

MountfieldSP530Found this exceptional. My landlord turned up with this mower and it took only 30 minutes to mow the lawn where it has previously taken over 2 hours.

The capacity of the grass collection unit is very good and the pick left `my` garden looking far neater than it ever has which is handy for the landlord as we`re being replaced at the end of the month.

Overall, for the money I paid for it (nothing) this was the best lawn mowing experience I`ve had. Doesn`t even compare to the days of mowing my parents lawn with the orange flymo and cutting the cable. I won`t be going back to those unhappy days when I have my (landlord`s) trusty Mountfield SP530.

Recommended.

UnbrandedPower-Trak 4000I bought this lawnmower 4 years ago and it`s been the best for cutting, ease of use and long power lead I can remember buying. QUALCASTConcorde 32 CordlessThis is a good mower for the price. (#80) If like me you have a small 20 watt solar panel in the garden the 12 volt battery can be recharged in 48 hours {assuming the sun shines of course) and the cost of cutting the grass is zero. Fully charged the battery will give you 30 minutes of cutting which is enough time for me to zip around both my front and rear lawns. For longer cutting just buy another 12 volt 12AH battery for about #20 on Ebay, and swap them over in 1 minute. The noise it makes is probably only 20% of my Flymo so neighbours shouldn`t be bothered. Because of its low power dc motor it won`t cut long grass, it will just clog up, so the first cut of the year in March will have to be done with a more powerful, mains powered Flymo but thereafter cutting the lawn weekly consumes no mains electricity, its good for my pocket and the planet. The mower comes with a plug in mains charger as well if you don`t yet have a solar panel. 4 out of 5CRABPOT22/07/2009 12:50:45

MTDSprinto 6.5HPI agree with the damp grass collecting problem. I have owned mine for 5 years now and apart from a couple of blade belts have had no engine problems at all. MTDSprinto 6.5HPWell, contrary to all the above reviews I have an MTD Sprinto which for all the grass it needs to cut (1/3 acre) it has been brilliant! Its small and compact and stores nicely away. Easily maintained by local rep - have it serviced each year as one would with a car and the thing has gone from strength to strength. Really pleased with it. Gripes (as expected with any piece of machinery) - blade needs to be sharpened to get the best results on the lawn, if not then it clogs and bends grass leaving awful cut. Clogged up grass catcher only if mowing in the morning or just before dusk otherwise great cuts. Safety seat cut out went within first month and was completely replaced seat and all by company - great service. I use our machine for more than just grass cutting - little girl has a trailer to sit in and gets towed behind - garden had gradient and machine operates perfectly well with this. Just messed around in the garden in the snow on it and certainly enjoyed its speedy little acceleration! Great buy from B & Q. You get what you pay for and certainly with engines unless they are maintained and serviced they will be prone to problems. Great to read reviews - sad to see no one with a positive story to tell about theirs. My lawns look great - would buy one of these again...prefer it to be a quad bike with a mower though! 4 out of 5Anon11/02/2009 06:36:36

The drive belt went this week (for the first time) and we bought a Halfords drive belt HB 925C which we was fairly easy to fit even though the relevant manual wasn`t supplied at purchase, and it is working a treat. 4 out of 5mossygreen02/10/2008 08:09:11

FlymoRoller Compact 4000Ive had one of these for four years, and not encountered the problems other people refer to. It cuts my grass well, whether its long or short, damp or dry. And the height adjuster on mine has firm notches, so stays where its set (OK, unless you drive it into the hedge so that a branch snags the adjuster and shifts it). There are a few downsides which other reviewers havent mentioned. Grassbox size is always a tradeoff between capacity and manoeuvrability. This one is inboard, so needs emptying more often. But this is compensated by the greater manoeuvrability. Robust use off the lawn on weed patches can mean that the roller pops out from between the plastic brackets, but its easily put back. In fact I took out the metal spindles on which the roller rotates and replaced them with a 50p threaded rod from Wicks, so no more trouble on that score. Unsurprisingly, you need to keep the air intakes to the electric motor clear of grass dust and debris. The manual says that the machine should have an annual specialist service. Its not clear what you would get for this. I havent bothered, and may well buy another of these when the current one expires.4 out of 5Amazon Reviewer05/07/2008 01:01:01

QUALCASTEasi-Trak 320I bought this after my flymo finally bit the dust (thank goodness, because it was awful!). It is incredibly light, and as other reviewers have said, it is easy to carry one-handed through the garage to the garden, leaving the other hand free to open doors etc. The collection box is quite small, and on my lawn I have to empty it at least 5 times, but that is a minor point overall. This also gives you an excuse to pause for a sip of cold beer on a hot day! Cable is not very long, but that is easily solved with a decent extension lead. This mower has no rollers for those that want stripes, but seeing as my lawn is also used as a football pitch, cricket field and badminton court this is not an issue. very good value, easy to use and has a simple notch adjustment for cutting height. Great overall.4 out of 5Amazon Reviewer02/07/2008 01:01:01

QUALCASTEclipse 320I cannot agree with the previous reviewer. I found the Eclipse easy to use, easy to empty and with it having a clean cutting action,( revolving blades on cutting plate) it gives a clean cut as distinct from the `ripping` action of a rotary. This is my third `Qualcast` and I would not go back to a `Flymo`. 4 out of 5E .J. B.10/10/2007 12:07:08

FlymoQuicksilver 46SDI bought my 46SD at Homebase for £188.00 in June 07. It is a quiet efficient little machine that cuts really well, wet or dry. The only design fault I have found is the levers for setting the cutting height can snag on bushes etc and suddenly drop the deck. An excellent product for the smaller lawn 4 out of 5Anon06/08/2007 13:31:38

MountfieldSP530Great mower, had mine for a few years now but I paid a bit more than the rest of you because I`ve had it a while! Doesn`t use oil, always starts ands as already stated it mows slopes with little problem. I would agree with the last bloke though, the lowest cutting height isn`t really low enough. The only problem I`ve had with it is the starting cord snapped yesterday & it looks like a fairly major job to change it as the cord fixes under a riveted cover... Still, after 3 or so years it probably deserves a service / blade sharpen etc! 4 out of 5Mountfield Momer10/07/2007 08:09:59

FlymoVenturer 320Im sure that everyone reading this is familiar with that elated feeling of getting a job well done. Spirits are hightened for the rest of the day/week/month and a sound, untroubled sleep is almost certain to ensue. And for those who relate to this semblance, I feel I can confidently assume that you have also experienced mild trauma when the job in question has been shoddy and scrabbly at best. The latter of these two states of consciousness was once common in my case, when I would frequently try in vain to compete with my neighbours salubrious garden, with its neatly trimmed edges and ostentatiously fashioned lawn. It was coming to the point where I was considering moving out when I stumbled across an advertisement in my bi-monthly magazine for the Flymo Venturer 320 Roller 1000W Electric Wheel. It was reasonably priced and had sported some flashy designs reminiscent of Lavender Banister OBE (graphic designer and one of my idols), and I decided it was worth a shot if it had the potential to solve my neighbourly troubles. In comparison to my old (and let me stress the importance of the word old in this context) lawnmower, if you can even call it that, the Flymo Venturer 320 Roller 1000W Electric Wheel gave me shivers. It felt like it was meant to be, a partnership, made in heaven. My lawn was no longer choppy, or unsightly, but graceful and poetic. I can now enjoy undisturbed dreams (mostly involving my champion lawn) and sit my bottom perfectly comfortably in my own enclosed bubble, out of which i can escape at intervals to point a jeery finger at my next door neighbour. I think hes planning on buying one now, maybe you should too.4 out of 5Amazon Reviewer18/06/2007 01:01:01

MTDE18CPros: Will cut anything, wet or dry. I`ve never seen a lawn that will defeat it. It`s a brute. Fast - with an 18` cut, it wipes out big lawns in no time. Sold, mostly steel, will last for yonks. Cons: It`s heavy. Fine for flat lawns, a handful if your lawn slopes or is an awkward shape because it`s hard to manouver around. Summary: If you`ve got a big flat lawn, buy one. If your lawn slopes or has lots of odd shapes, get something lighter. 4 out of 5Martin.19/04/2007 15:20:01

Power Devil40cm petrol mowerCan`t fault it! its a great size too some of the more expensive ones i think are just too big. This one is light, easy too use, cuts well. The only slight problem I had was I left the grass to grow too long and it struggled abit, partly because it was damp. however I borrowed my old mans which is bigger and better and that found it hard too, but it did do job quicker than mine one have. 4 out of 5overworkedchimp03/05/2006 08:44:31

POWER DEVILPDG4037MUsed this mower for more than a year now. It has worked well and produced a high standard of cut lawn. Only now is the blade showing signs of wear, and it has been sharpened twice this season already. I think that the cutting edge is less hard that at the outset, so the resharpened edge shows signs of damage quite readily. 4 out of 5I Gee03/05/2006 08:44:03

FLYMOCompact 400I have been pleased with this machine. I have owned a compact 400 for about 7 years and the only parts I have had to replace are the blade and spacer (twice as I am about to change them again). The only real snag with this machine is that it is not very manouverable and as it has aged the grass tends to stick to the now not so shiny plastic underneath and it has to be cleared frequently, particularly with damp grass (but it is an old lawnmower). Strongly recommended. 4 out of 5David03/05/2006 08:43:56

ChallengeCPLM4235Bought this on 27.6.05 from Argos for £79.99. Reasonably easy to put together(about 20 mins.) and was up and running. Decent cut although you have to take off wheels if you want to change cut height. Quite heavy as well, so make sure you don`t have the car parked far away when you buy it. QUALCASTEasi Trak 32If you are looking for a good value mower for a small lawn then I would recommend this model. It has a powerful motor, strong blade and solid albeit plain body. The quality of cut is comparable to more expensive mowers but like everything it isn't perfect. The grass box is small and does need emptying frequently, especially on damp grass. The Height adjustment is 'unique' but not unreasonably difficult although people with limited mobility in their hands may experience difficulty.

Overall this is a no frills lawmower that gets the job done... Do you need more?

FlymoRoller Compact 340Looks like my motor has just failed. Wife said it `sounded funny` and their was a `burning smell`. I have managed to strip the Lawnmower down and removed the motor. It is difficult to turn and feels notchy. Replacements are #25 from espares so it is probably worth me replacing it but dissassembling the lawnmower wasnt easy. 3 out of 5G.02/09/2009 07:45:51

MccullochM46-500CDVery unhelpful handbook and difficult to undersdtand. You cannot fit the pull starter cord in its working position if you follow the numbered instructions becuase you need to depress the mower brake to be able to extend the cord, which isn`t expalined in the manual. There is also a water hose fitting on top of the housing presumably for cleaning, but again no mention of this in the manual on how to use it!! its also very difficult to connect the control cords again using the very poor instructions. Good price but I think you get what you pay for. 3 out of 5Charlie07/07/2009 08:55:16

HayterEnvoy 36cmI also bought this mower bacause of the name and like the others, my machine does not pick up in damp conditions. Now after very little use the plastic fan has cracked (and no, I haven`t hit anything!)Because of the split it jams on the housing almost burning the motor out - not what you`d expect from a quality make. 3 out of 5Eric04/05/2009 14:49:25

HayterHeritage M10/30The machine is tough, agriculturally built and has very simple mechanicals compared to others. It is noisy though, and the Tecumseh gearbox is vague and difficult to accurately place in a particular speed. Whilst it isn`t as easy to drive as the smaller rival Mountfield/Castel equivalent it replaced, the strong blade mounting (the Castel was always breaking blade mounting brackets) and quality build is better. Steel body might need watching for rust over time in our wet climate, but chassis is strong to carry the Americans that this Murray-based machine was designed to carry. Swapping from mulching to collection is a little tedious but the parts are pretty abuse proof and well made. With better silencing, a more positive gearbox speed change mechanism and a plastic deck this would be a world beater. 3 out of 5Kevin Armstrong26/09/2008 07:30:09

QUALCASTCobra 32Same moan as every one else/ like the ease and the quietness fo the motor but, it does struggle of the grass is long or slightly wet! when the blade doesn`t turn you expect to find a massive blockage only to find a minimal amount of grass! 3 out of 5Thomas26/09/2008 07:30:06

QUALCASTCobra 32I can confirm as a user of this lawn mower it is durable, reliability and well built and cuts well at either height settings. Drawbacks as in other reports likely to clog blade and grass box if grass is slightly long or damp, given British summers it would reign supreme in dry fairly short grasses top-up trims but definatly not for problematic or long-grassed gardens. Grass should therefore be completely dry/fairly short to get the best from this lawnmower which restricts it`s limitations. A small machine for smallish gardens. 3 out of 5Garden Mower review.18/09/2008 08:55:59

QUALCASTCobra 32It does indeed clog very easily - the switch on mine is now becoming intermittent which leads to more jamming of the blade. 3 out of 5Paraquat (spouse claims allergy to grass)18/09/2008 08:55:47

ChallengeCPLM4637SI bought this white elephant! It cuts great and wizzes along and the law gets done in record time and I have neat line on my lawn. It starts first time and mechanically (engine wise) has not problems but.. here`s the rub! The cables streatch early and work loose. The belt didn`t last long so now I push it `cos I can`t find a replacement belt (all advice on where to get one welcome). Also, the pully rope broke. The firs time I tied the ends together but yesterday it snapped clean leaving no spare. When I undid the hub to look into the pully casing, the spring jumped up and smacked me in the face. Unless I can find a replacement hub inclusive of the retained spring and the rope pully, the mower is useless amd can only be scrapped. Can this have been passed by BS as effective? A thin piece of rope that was bound to wear out fast??!! 3 out of 5Ajay16/08/2008 12:32:45
