Limited Editions Buyers Guide

Limited editions are essentially products of which only a certain quantity have been produced. Often manufactured as novelty items or in response to special events or occasions, they are intentionally designed to have a significantly reduced circulation partly because the demand for such products is expected to be temporary but mostly to increase their value over a longer period of time. Limited editions are influenced by normal economic factors of supply and demand so, if a product is only produced in limited supply, a sufficiently high demand will justify a relatively expensive price tag. However, this inflated cost is not only shouldered by the initial buyer but is picked up by subsequent purchasers, who are often in search of collectible items.

When buying limited editions, it is worth finding out just how limited they are; in other words, you should check to see how many of a particular item have been produced. For example, Street Shirts sell a range of funny and interesting t-shirts that are each produced in a limited quantity. In particular, there are only one hundred copies of each type of t-shirt made by Street Shirts, which include the so-called Agony Ant, Atom, Cactus, Class, Couch Potato, Genius and Lightbulb t-shirts. In fact, if you are looking for an authentic novelty t-shirt that is unlikely to be worn by every Tom, Dick and Harry in the neighbourhood, the Street Shirts range is definitely one to consider.

Limited editions can also apply to computer games, consoles and DVDs. Often containing additional scenes, extra characters or fresh console designs or skins, these products are produced in short supply and are usually snapped up quickly. The 'Monsters, Inc.' Playstation 2 game, for instance, is a limited edition that can be purchased at a low price because electronic limited editions tend not to be collectible items. When buying a limited edition product, you should consider the additional value it offers in being fairly rare. If the product cost is high and there is no real tangible benefit to buying the limited version over the standard copy, it is only advisable to purchase the limited edition if it will offer you some additional personal value. Otherwise, if you are buying such a product as a gift for someone else, the limited aspect may give the present a little extra value, weight or worth.
