This player should be everyones dream: internet, music, video, pictures, all in the palm of your hand. But for me, it was a bit of a disappointing dream.
The volume is quite low quality, the speakers are quiet, even in my almost-silent home. Just didnt do it justice. 250gb is a lot as well. Enough, I thought, to keep me preoccupied but the one thing that let down this player was the awful battery life. It says 12 hours and even thats not enough. But really, for me, it ran for about 5-6 hours max. Very poor show for a player that has everything. I mean, they were trying to target it at people with busy lifestyles or people who travelled a lot, right? Poor show. The music quality was not great however, as I mentioned before. As well as this, when you try and skip tracks too often, it crashes. And also, just browsing your pictures takes up a lot of the battery life and is very slow.
Though, I was quite pleased for the video show. It was very clear and rather good quality, but this also drained the battery life. The interface was quite easy to understand once you got the hang of it. I was also pleased to see they integrated Opera as their internet browser! I was also able to go on youtube to watch their videos too.
And then theres the design. I really didnt think it was going to be that big, but yes, its bigger than I imagined! Quite heavy too. When recharging, you never quite know when its done as it never told you, the light wouldnt switch off when its done either. Mysterious player. And it gets veeeery hot when charging. At one point, it smelt like the metal was burning which was quite worrying. The touch-screen was... well, your typical touch-screen. You have to press a little harder sometimes. But the stylus, at least, comes in handy.
Overall, dont treat this as an mp3 player with extra bits and bobs. Its far from it. If youd like, treat it as a movie player with extra bits. But one where you can only play one movie, surf the internet a little bit, then recharge it once again. To be honest, I had this for less than a week, was unimpressed and then sold it. Its a very gimmicky player which needs a lot of modifying but maybe my expectations were too high. If you want just EVERYTHING in one thing, go for it. But there were too many negatives in this Archos product to let me even consider another Archos product ever again.
Reviewed by: Amazon Reviewer Rating:  Date Reviewed: 26Jul2009 | | | purchased archos 80GB,after 3 months battery failed rang the so called customer service on premium rate number was greated by nice staff member UNTILL i informed them i had a faulty unit then their tone changed.returned the unit at own cost and it was returned back to me still faulty so rang them again on premium rate number, unit was returned again at my cost.this time when it was returned back to me it was still faulty and also now had a damaged screen of which archos refused to accept blame rang the post office as it was insured and they also refused to accept the blame, so after 2 months still got a knackerd archos and have had to contact trading standards,i have better things to do with my life.

Unable to record from TV, although the system goes through the motions when you try to open the recorded file to view, you receive an error message stating `damaged and incomplete file`. Had daily contact with technical support but still no joy. When playing a video via the internet sometimes you get a blank space with a Flash 9 jpg. The Archos/Opera is supposed to support Flash 9-but it doesnt work on many Flash 9 websites so beware.
My advice to any would be purchaser is dont buy an Archos unless you
a) Want a heart attack from the frustration or b) Like throwing over £300 down the drain. Archos products are certainly not worth the money. An expensive piece of junk.
I am really disappointed that I had to award it even one star. It really gets no stars from me. A lovely looking piece of equipment that certainly just doesnt deliver. DO NOT BUY.
I will NEVER buy another Archos product AGAIN-they are rubbish. Dont you our youll end up wasting money and tearing your hair out with frustration. You have BEEN warned.

My main problem is when I had my originally issues with the machine I called Archos product support and never in my life has anyone spoken to me the way 2 individuals from this company done so. The are the most rude and arrogant Customer Service Section I have ever called and if I did not like the product so much I would never deal with them in the future.

Amazing machine and very easy to use, drag and drop vids/music/pictures and very fast.

If you purchase extras please hope you are able to install them without problems because if you have to call THIS LOT OF EXTREMELY RUDE AND UNHELPFUL DEPARTMENT,EXPECT YOUR BLOOD PRESSURE TO RISE .
Maybe I have just been really unlucky with the people i managed to speak with at Archos but when you call AMAZON CUSTOMER SERVICE DEPARTMENT thats when you really know how CUSTOMER SERVICE should work.
WHY CANT MORE COMPANYS WORK LIKE AMAZON AND PROVIDE THE HIGHEST LEVEL OF SERVICE AT ALL TIMES

Only downer is having to pay for the extra software bits and pieces which is a bit cheap of Archos but its their way of doing business. Superceded by the Archos 5 now which is supposedly better and a lot slicker looking.

First off, when I ordered my 160gb 605 through amazon, the unit I received was an 80gb, packaged and labelled as a 160gb. I contacted amazon who instantly refunded the difference (excellent customer service!!). I then tried to download the expensive plugins and the website just sent me round in a perpetual link and after a few goes and emails tho their web support/customer services I gave up on this.
Recently my device would not connect through either the usb or mini dock. Archos did replace my mini dock, but not the usb lead, leaving me with no way to connect to my pc to upload content. After emailing the customer services and getting no response again I figured I would be better off just buying another usb cable. So, back to the Archos website and about 5 times of trying to enter billing/shipping information and getting an error message telling me that I needed to enter information that Id already filled out has led me to write my first and only negative review.
In summary, I would never recommend buying any products from Archos. The products may look ok on paper but nothing is worth this amount of time, effort and frustration

Its over-priced for what it does and I wish now that I bought an ITouch.
Their support is non-existent and they dont care about customers.
To have to spend so much extra money on the accessories is a con.
If this review facility would allow no stars I would have given it.

The original set up is very straightforward and having charged the unit I connected the dvr station to the sky digibox via our standard dvd recorder. Once the unit is configured to your system and the opening Archos screen appears on your tv screen you are almost there. The purchase of the web browser enables a tv scheduler to be downloaded and recording to begin.
I cannot understand the negative reviews of Archos customer care. I had a slight problem in the week and contacted Marks and Spencers Technology department from whom I made the purchase and they got Archos to give me a ring. The person I spoke to was more than helpful, guided me through a quick repair process and even rang back an hour later to check that all was well, which it was.
This is a brilliant product and I would recommend it to anyone. All that hanging around shopping centres bored while the wifes shopping is a thing of the past - Ill just settle down and watch a recording and hope she takes her time.
Reviewed by: Amazon Reviewer Rating: Date Reviewed: 10Jan2009 | | | i own the 160gig,its a brilliant piece of kit! music is good on it as long as you use decent headphones,the built in speaker is passable but not great!!,photos look good on the screen,videos look good and it will play most types,divx/avi/mpeg4 etc (the new plugin when released will able it to play more types and in higher definition).internet is easy to setup and use,just like using a pc but obviously smaller!.play games on it(have to install game plugins).
the only problems are you have to buy plugins(from the archos website) to be able to use the internet,play videos,games,widgets etc and they aint exactly cheap! (really they should all be pre-installed when you buy one)
The battery dosent last to long when constantly in use playing vidoes or listening to music! so a docking station or the external battery pack is really a must have to buy!
this is why i only gave it 4 stars and 5
it IS a very good piece of kit!

It almost never shows the correct CD cover against the music Im playing. When it works its fine but a simple iPod or something would have done just as well and been less trouble. If it was trouble free then it would be worth it!
