Musical Keyboards Buyers Guide

The days when you had the choice of either an upright, piano, or a baby grand piano have long gone. Today with the advance of digital technology, there is a vast array of musical keyboards from which to choose. Musical keyboards have become even more popular as modern manufacturers have made them not only more realistic sounding, but also multifunctional. This means that within a short space of time, a beginner can not only get to grips with the musical keyboard as an instrument, but can also improve timing due to additional metronome and drum features on many keyboards. Accompaniment and teaching facilities are also available on some good quality keyboards.

When choosing musical keyboards it is important to determine what the keyboard will be used for and the level of competence of the player. A beginner's keyboard can be fun and may be almost like a toy, but many of the latest models have full sized keys and touch sensitivity, making them more akin to an acoustic piano. The age and hand span of the player, may also determine which musical keyboard should be chosen. If possible, it is advisable to choose a full sized keyboard, as this helps with subsequent transition to higher end keyboards.

There are a wide range of options available. Synthesizers have become increasingly popular as a musical keyboard. They are versatile however they may not offer the touch sensitivity of some models, which may make the change to a traditional keyboard more difficult to adapt to. In terms of musical keyboards in reality a piano and a synthesizer, although similar in some senses, are very different instruments for different purposes.

More advanced musical keyboards offer the instrumentalist the option of becoming a 'one man band' and these can be suitable for stage work. Another option is the workstation, which in effect is a portable studio, wherein the player can compose and arrange on the keyboard and record the whole process into the unit.

Whatever your choice, it is best to try as many options as possible before making the final choice. Listen to recommendations and take the time to ensure you get the right musical keyboard for your purposes. Getting the right equipment at the right time is particularly important in maintaining interest and helping to advance the progress of young players.
