Speaker Reviews 15 June 2009
The Vita Audio R2i stereo system offers a DAB+ module, a large screen and an integrated iPod dock. Users also get 3D sound processing, in addition to alarm and clock functions, two aux ins plugs and nominal power output of 20 Watts. This rich mix of features can all be controlled from a distance by way of a handy remote control. There's also considerable variety in the design of the device itself, with woven mesh grilles, steel panels and controls that are soft to the touch, all of which presents an alternative to some of the plastic contraptions posing on the market as competitors. Available in July from around £280.
Making a welcome comeback to the market is a range of Klipsch Heritage speakers, offering a series of handmade models that breathe a strong sense of history. The Klipschorn is the biggest of the four on offer, standing nearly 1.3m high and offering a two-inch midrange driver, a one-inch tweeter and a 15-inch fibre composite woofer. The La Scala II moved into domestic use after originally being used as a PA system, while the three-way Cornwall III has an improved level of sensitivity from the Klipschorn. The Heresy III is the final one, offering features such as a bi-wire network, midrange drivers and a diaphragm-equipped tweeter. Prices range between £850 and £6,000.
Perhaps aiming for groundbreaking is the Teufel System 5 THX Select 2, which claims to be the first home theatre system fully certified to the THX Select 2 standard. Users getting hold of the system will find themselves with three separate speaker models. A pair of S 500 D dipoles acts as rear speakers and S 500 SCR front speakers are also included. Then there's two 300mm S 5000 SW subwoofers with a range reaching for 25Hz. The company says the system is aimed at users with spaces up to 50 sq m in size. It's available this month for around £1,400.
