Mobile handset makers back plans for universal charger

17 February 2009

Mobile phone users of the world rejoice – the world's leading manufacturers have put their support behind plans for a universal charger.

The GSM Association (GSMA) announced at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona that they and 17 leading manufacturers have set a target date of 2012 to deliver a micro-USB based charging solution across the industry.

Chief executive officer of GSMA Rob Conway said: "The mobile industry has a pivotal role to play in tackling environmental issues and this programme is an important step that could lead to huge savings in resources, not to mention convenience for consumers.

"There is enormous potential in mobile to help people live and work in an eco-friendly way and with the backing of some or the biggest names in the industry, this initiative will lead the way."

Also making waves at the event was the news that Oricane had developed a prototype contact database capable of storing up to 200 million contact name and number entries on a mobile phone handset.
