PS3 Games Review 25 September 2008
The classic futuristic racing series comes to Playstation 3 (PS3) this week with Wipeout HD appearing some 13 years after it made its first appearance on the original console. The Wipeout series has always been known for stunning, unique visuals and given the graphics capabilities of the PS3 its hardly surprising that this latest edition pulls no punches. However, enthusiasm for it looking so good has been tempered by the fact that it doesn't really give you anything new to look at, but this shouldn't put off too many players particularly fans of the series who will be impressed by the sheer depth of race action to explore.
For a more realistic, but probably just as fast-paced competitive experience NHL 9 is also out this week. The latest in EA's ever-popular ice hockey series features an enhanced version of the widely-lauded skill stick technology, which allows some of the most precise control of the puck seen in the genre. The artificial intelligence (AI) has also been improved so that the gameplay is the most realistic yet. New this year is the Be A Pro mode, which allows users to create their own novice stick-wielder and take their player from rookie to legend with the NHL team of their choice. The gameplay and level of detail is completely immersive.
Away from sports, this week's other big release is Brothers In Arms: Hell's Highway another game chock-full of realism. Apparently developers UbiSoft and GearBox recruited World War II vets to consult them on battle conditions, and it shows as the historical detail is extremely intricate. The graphics look great, and the overall experience is involved and gripping. The overall style is gritty with the rifles and grenades action balanced out by the achievements system, which rewards you for finding the wall scribblings of bored infantrymen, for example. Early indications are that this is shaping up to be a worthy competitor to Medal of Honour and Call of Duty. © Adfero Ltd | |
