Phoenix wright is one of nintendos best selling series. This game is the first in the series and is the hardest to get because capcom underestimated how much people would love it. In america alone it sold out in one week, had to do a reissue, sold out in a few days and did two other re-issues before it stopped printing the game. This was a simular case over here. So, i had read a lot about this series and saw the first game for £20 and thought id get it. I loved hotel dusk and another code/trace memory (im a big fan of detective stories!) so, looking for something new and not having to shoot anything or play mini games, i opted for this. I didnt know what to expect and hoped that it would be good. I AM LOVIN THIS GAME! The characters are very funny and its great to see the range of emotions the have! The screens are bright and although they show the murder, they are not graphic but just enough to get the imagination going. What i especially love is how the touch screen is used, how the characters help a little if you are stuck and the mic. You have the option the either press a button or, pressing the y button, tells you what to yell into the mic. The first time i did it, i felt a little silly, but the cases (or the two i have played) are so full of action that you feel you are dealing with the case and in no time at all, i was yelling `objection` and boy does it feel good! I never thought that i would feel so great to get a `not guilty` verdict! An added bonus is that my brother, who doesnt own a ds and isnt into these types of game, peeked over my shoulder, and even he was hooked- he even helped me with one thing, cheers bro! He got really excited and loved it when the the character fell apart and confessed (boy was that second case hard!).
Overall, i love this game. I now understand why it is so popular. I feel lucky to get this game because it is now out of print and pretty hard to come by with the price i paid for it! One tiny thing- i much prefer the american cover (for some reason, this is the only ace attorny game which have diffrent covers!) but i like the side of it. Trivial i know, but thats just my preference!
Two tiny niggles- one, the mic. For girls playing this game, speak in a lower tone when shouting. I found it didnt pick up my high pitch voice when i got into the game. Secondly, the age rating. Who rated the game as 7+? No one would ever give it to a seven year old. Its not that it is gruesome, its just too old and technical for them. I think the age rating should be 12+, maybe even 15+ due to the complex nature of the stories. These are tiny and dont really affect the game itself.
Why oh why does nintendo release such good games? Im glad i got into this late as i would have to wait for the next ace attorney game to come out. Im looking forward to playing the next games of this fantastic and refreshing series. Great for an older gamer. If you can get this, please do, as youll be making the wright choice and wont regert it! (sorry, had to put it in there somewhere!)

This is definitely one of the best games yet for the DS! you get to work as a rookie defense attorney- Phoenix Wright trying to stop your clients getting a guilty verdict.

You get to work on five cases in total which get progressively harder- case 1 being very simple and case 5 being a lot more complicated.

The game is divided into 2 distinct segments-

Court mode- Where you stand in court listenig to witnesses testimonies pressing for more information and presenting evidence to show contradictions.

Investigation Mode-This is where you walk around with your assistant Maya (you meet her in case no.2) questioning the games many hilarious characters and gathering evidence to use in the courtroom

I especially liked case no.3 its amzing how the whole case gets turned on its head

i would recommend this game anyday!

`Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney` is the most fun I have had so far on the DS. You play Phoenix Wright, a rookie defence attorney, who has the option to shout `Objection!` far more often than real lawyers ever get to do (sadly, I am one, and so can vouch for this!) Although marketed as a `lawyer` game, it is not very realistic about the legal profession, although some reviewers seem to have unfairly marked it down for not reflecting the legal system with which they are familiar. For example, I read one review noting that the jury is nowhere to be seen. This game began life in Japan, which has not historically featured jury trials, so its not surprising that you dont see the jury here. Much of `Phoenix Wright`s gameplay in fact goes on outside the courtroom, involving investigating crimes in order to try to build up the case for the defence for your client.

I am surprised just how clever some of the dialogue and puzzles are in this game, as I was expecting something significantly more simplistic. The game benefits from an amusing, intelligent script and storyline, and engaging characters. It is fair to say that the structure is linear, but that is what you get with this type of game, as with the `point and click` adventure games and going back even further, the text-based only adventures (showing my age...) There are a few problems, though.

Firstly, the courtroom scenes are a lot more fun than the investigative aspect, and every time I saw the court appear again, I was happy to stop wandering around examining scenes and finally get back to challenging testimony and spotting contradictions and the other aspects of gameplay that make this title original. From time to time in the investigating, I found myself engaged in the typical adventure game `try every object on everyone and everything and see what progresses the story`-type exercise. On a few occasions, the way in which the story was moved along was not exactly logical. In one adventure in particular, I was required to show a particular character an item that no sane person would wave in front of said character, but the game demands this action to progress. On the courtroom side, in a few places, the game insisted that I had to challenge particular dialogue, or present an item in response to a particular statement, with no real basis for this being the `right` time to do so over any other. A little bit frustrating, especially when I was penalised by the judge for supposedly doing something insane!

However, these problematic instances were thankfully in the minority. In most cases, thinking through what to do provided me with a nicely logical answer and a satisfying animated pay-off for my efforts.

It is the games final chapter that is the most enjoyable, which contains the most depth, and finally ensures that this title earns five stars. Up until this last story, I was going to give this four out of five, but it is in the end adventure that many of the aspects of the game properly come together. Perhaps some playable features in the final chapter, together with this storys sense of complexity, should have been introduced to the game at an earlier stage.

Nevertheless, this is a hugely enjoyable adventure game with an original slant, and some very clever little touches.

The graphics, whilst nothing mindboggling, are nicely drawn and effective, and in particular the reactions of Phoenix and his courtroom counterparts on the prosecution side are very entertaining. The music is simple but works well enough, too.
