Oil Filled Radiators Buyers Guide
Oil filled radiators are typically composed of vertical metal fins, so that they resemble traditional central heating radiators. However, radiators of this type contain a heating element that is submerged in a reservoir of special heating oil, permanently sealed within the body of the radiator. Electricity is passed through the heating element, which becomes hot and, in turn, heats the oil. A thermostat allows the desired temperature to be set and when the radiator reaches that temperature the heating element is switched off and electricity consumption ceases.
The nature of oil filled radiators means that they may take longer to heat up than other forms of heater, but, by the same token, the oil retains heat very well so they can stay hot for hours. Radiators of this type are available in a range of sizes, or surface areas, to suit large or small rooms and are often equipped with wheels so that they can be transferred easily from one room to another if necessary.
They are also quiet, reliable and do not dry the air as much as other forms of heating. This makes them ideal for use in bedrooms, for example, particularly for anyone suffering from a respiratory or skin complaint. It is not unusual for an oil filled radiator to emit a smell, at least when it is used for the first time. This is nothing to be concerned about and the smell will fade in due course. In fact, it can often be eliminated by running the radiator at maximum power for 8 hours or so in a well-ventilated room.
Reputable brands include DeLonghi, Dimplex, Swan and Sealey although the range now available is immense. You will need to measure your room and use a heat calculator (of which there are many online) to determine the size and power output required. Other than that, the choice is as much down to individual tastes as anything else.
