PA Systems Buyers Guide

At some point during most performers' careers they will have to consider buying their own PA systems. This may possibly be because they are fed up arriving at gigs to find poor quality PA systems, or they may simply find that hiring PA systems on an ongoing basis is too expensive.

One of the simplest approaches is to buy the whole system as a package rather than trying to put together and integrate a set of individual parts. A PA system is likely to consist of microphones, amplifiers, speakers, a mixer unit, cables and possibly a graphic equalizer and signal processing hardware.

If you have hired a PA system regularly this should provide some experience from which to make a decision. If you have information from other artists, this will also help to drive your decision

You need to determine what size of venues you are likely to be playing and how much amplification you will require. Speakers are important, as no matter how well the sound is managed and amplified, if the speakers cannot handle it, you will not sound any better and may even blow your expensive new speakers! PA sound output is generally measured in Kilowatts or simply "K". Small systems start at less than 1K and 100K should cover Wembley! A good dynamic microphone is a must, such as the classic Shure SM58. Different mics are needed for drums, vocals and you may also want to look at modern wireless mics. You will need a good mixer unit to control the balance and tone across multiple channels, allowing you to mix the instruments into one fantastic sound, hopefully. You can also buy mixer amps, which are the basic level amp for solo performers, or as an intermediate you can buy powered amps which handle twelve to sixteen inputs. These may contain onboard effects. Don't under estimate the importance (and cost) of good quality signal cables and other interconnects.

PA systems have to be fit for your specific purposes, both in terms of output, control and functionality. Most importantly the system must be robust enough to withstand loading and unloading on a regular basis (flight cases are expensive but are a must) and don't forget that it has to be the right size to fit into whatever mode of transport you use.
