| Philips | SPC900NC | At last Philips have made Vista drivers available for this webcam (both 32 and 64bit versions) Please note that the drivers are available through the Microsoft Windows Update site - theyre not for download direct from Philips own website. Just plug in your webcam and let Vista find the software from the Windows update site.
This is an excellent camera in all respects apart from the rather idiosyncratic clamping arrangement. i.e. it doesnt work too well! I solved this by buying my own camera clamp from Maplins and screwing it into the threaded tripod mount in the base of the webcam. Now its rock steady, no problems at all. It fits perfectly on top of my laptop (but can be used with any other type of monitor too), it was very simple and easy to install the software for it and the quality of picture is great. I had the webcam working in about 10 minutes, its so easy to set up. I found that the auto settings for the webcam werent set to what I felt resulted in a perfect picture quality but after fiddling around with the settings I corrected this and the picture quality is great now. Its clear, and not at all grainy or fuzzy and it doesnt drag as much as other webcams. Clearly its going to be a bit clearer in full, bright day light then it will be at night, as is the case with any webcam, but even with artifical lights at night the picture quality is still great, although you may want to adjust the settings slightly if you dont have enough lights in the room. The camera itself is nice looking and seems very durable. I wanted this webcam to use specifically with Skype and it works very well with it. I should mention that Im not crazy about the headset that comes with it because its very fiddly and uncomfortable to use and not of especially good quality but I think its just included in the box as a bonus and its still better then nothing if you havent got a headset. However, as I already had a mic and headphones set I didnt buy the webcam for these so it didnt matter to me. Even with the less than perfect headset, this webcam is very good value for money and Id recommend it to any looking at purchasing one. For strters its a great size, not too small but not too large and the available colour really does look good. I dropped it the other day on a wooden floor from about 5 foot high expecting it to shatter. Not a single mark not even a scratch. The flexible clip is fantastic i was a bit woried that it wouldnt fit on my computer screen because it is flat screen but pokes out a bit at the back but the flexible fastened right round it. And if your computer is not flat screen there is no worrin as the clip can fold flat to put of a flat surface. Despite some contreversion i believe the picture quality is great. You can adjust the focus easily to make a perfect picture no matter what size it is. The lead is very long so it will easily reach to any USB port and fits in well ontop of your computer. | Logitech | Quickcam Pro 5000 | Well, i didnt know whether to get a webcam at this price. I use webcams for making videos for my site, so didnt know if the spec would be up to any good, especially the built in microphone.
The video clarity on the product is not amazing, but it isdefinately good enough for what i and most people will need. I also was impressed by the aduio quality. The webcam picks up voice very well, even from a few meters away. The still shot mode is good as well, with not much blur and good focus and lighting.
STANDARD FEATURES = 9/10
Now onto the extra features. The software installed very qucikly on XP and Vista, and if you do as the instruction say (not plugging the webcam in until the software is installed) it will pick it up fine on both OSs (havent tried Linux yet). The avatars are also pretty fun to mess around with video calling. It works good on Skype and was smooth even when talking to people in the US (Internet connection dependant though). There are also some good downloadable features you can customise the avatars with (the wizards best).
The advanced features include Righlight technology and Rightsound. Rihgtlight boosts the lighting when your in a low lit room, however i found if i was using artificial lighting, the camera constantly flickered. Right sound may be the reason why the audio is good, but i hadnt turned it off as it isa default feature.
EXTRA FEATURES = 9/10
To sum up then, i think that this camera is well worth the money, and you will most likely be pleased with it. It is packed wth extra features, making it fun and more usable. The sandard features are also good, providing clear video and crisp audio. Basically the fundamentals of a good webcam.

| CREATIVE | Webcam NX Pro | I bought this camera yesterday and I am full satisfied with it. You have to know next one: if Your computer running on Windows 98 you will be prompt to insert Win98 CD-ROM to finish the installation because some files are required (kstvtune.ax etc..) but don't worry if you do not have CD ROM(that is my situation) ,you can find that files on some web sites to download them for free.
Video quality is just fine at 320x240 and also is great at 640 x 480; I am satisfied with it and maybe some People expect too much from this camera and then they say: "This camera is not good" --- on contrary camera is GREAT (for myself).
Just one interesting thing about sensor of the camera: it is designed for low light level and not for High level of light! That is interesting because I try to point camera through my window and it was very shine day here in Serbia On December 31 2003! So sensor cannot take a good picture because light was very high but works perfect in room light level... USB cable is 1,8 meters long. Picture capturing is also great and you can take a pretty good picture with this camera but if you are not satisfied with Pictures, You can use softer that comes with camera to improve picture quality.

| LOGITECH | Clicksmart 420 | This camera is pushed with 1280*960 resolution. After speaking with 2 Logitech tech support guys. I have been given two different stories as why I have been unable to get anything more than 640*480 out of it. Both stories were unacceptable as excuse and one of the guys said that the product packaging was misleading. I tested both ways given to me to try and get 1280*960 out of it and neither worked. The product instructions state that the camera shoots at 640*480 only and is not adjustable. One techie said this is true but via the bundled software it can be converted to 1280*960. Most imaging software can do this and the result is always less then it would have been had the pic been actually shot at the higher res.
End result...a 640*480 camera for a 1280*960 price.
