Based loosely around the book by Tom Clancy, Rogue Spear is generally a brilliant game. It first came out around 4 years ago, but is still thoroughly enjoyable. The graphics are suprisingly good for an oldish game, even when you zoom in, and your men even breath realistically. The controls arent really complex, and when the mouse and arrow keys are used, you can move your men around accurately. There is a large choice of weapons and equipment: several different SMGs, some silenced (MP5s, a few sniper rifles (including the Barett .5 calibre one, the standard assault rifles (M-16, M-14, SA80, M-4 Carbine), 2 shotguns (Manelli and SPAS-12), a range of handguns (including the .5 calibre desert eagle), frag grenades etc. You can also plan a mission in detail, chosing your routes, go-codes, telling your men what to do when, and even chose your men themselves, The gameplay itself is excellent, gripping and fast-paced, while the missions range from a boeing 747 to a nuclear power plant. The fighting is suprisingly realistic, with different calibres doing different damage against body armour, and guns displaying a wide range of different accuracies. People can even get shot and start limping. The AI is average, with the enemy not too bad, and when your teamates arent doing anything, they will defend themselves, though never look behind even when they hear the screams of their own teamates being killed behind them. Overall Rogue Spear is a brilliant game, well worth buying, and so is its add-on pack Urban Operations.
Reviewed by: Amazon Reviewer Rating: Date Reviewed: 04Apr2003 | | | Rogue Spear on the PC is good. This is tactical gaming at its best. Playing as an elite Rainbow operative, you must organise your team; choose your weapons carefully and lead them against highly intelligent terrorists; the AI in this game is superb. This makes the multiplayer extremely replayable. Although the controls are some what complicated, it takes some getting used to and it needs practice before you become an elite operative. The graphics are good for the and the sound is amazing. The tense music adds to the gameplay 10 fold. This game is far better than is PS cousin.
