I can only be amazed by the opening dialogue to this game as I heard the radio show... `Thats lifted right out of John Carpenters The Fog!`
Other than that Im a little more of a traditionalist when it comes to the point-and-click genre and prefer it when I can see my character instead of flicking through a electronic pictorial of dark, dingy surroundings.
As I kept playing this game I found that production must have been very cheap and with little heart given to this mind-numbing game with little tension, poor acting and very very cheap looking effects for this day and age I found myself slowly switching off. I also found myself wishing for the old days of point-and-click puzzle adventures to return. Think Ill give this one a miss thanks.
Reviewed by: Amazon Reviewer Rating: Date Reviewed: 14Jul2009 | | | This promised to be a good classical adventure game. I was therefore quite disappointed to find the scene changes almost primeval with a `plot` that really left you feeling `I dont care`. When the end came I was quite glad as I could then get on with my new purchase `Secret Files 2` - a proper game
Reviewed by: Amazon Reviewer Rating: Date Reviewed: 07Jun2009 | | | This is quite a good game considering where it came from. Its a point and click mystery game and it has got lots of atmosphere to it. It doesnt have all the flashing lights, graphics and explosions that your other modern games have but its an exceptional production considering where it has come from and the small budget involved. I only hope that the team that made this get some more backing and release another game along the same lines as this one.
Reviewed by: Amazon Reviewer Rating: Date Reviewed: 09Apr2009 | | | I have had this game for 6 months, however I installed it today. I have played it for 45 mins. OK but after 45 mins I am still no the wiser what I am looking for or what the point of it is all. Mildly entertaining but can anybody put me in the right direction what it is all about and the storyline thanks.
Reviewed by: Amazon Reviewer Rating: Date Reviewed: 14Feb2009 | | | This game was brilliant.
Scary, gripping, thought provoking, and edge of the seat suspense. I highly recommend this game for anyone who likes a good mystery. It took me three days to complete the game but it gave me many hours of gameplay.
ALso if youve ever seen the Tom Baker Doctor Who story `The Stones Of Blood` youll have to smile at the nods to that story. For example in `The Stones Of Blood` one of the main characters is Professor Amelia Rumford. Pick up a piece of newspaper in Barrow Hill and youll read that Professor Amelia Rumford had been working on Barrow Hill.
The only problem with the game is that it took an hour to install onto my Vista Home Premium but once installed it worked fine.
An excellent game.
Reviewed by: Amazon Reviewer Rating: Date Reviewed: 09Feb2009 | | | Barrow hill is on the surface a horror game where an ancient evil has accidentaly been released and is now hunting and killing the people around its former prison. Unfortunately due to truly horrible voice acting - and this is important as you really dont come in contact with the evil entity much since it is mostly occupied with killing everyone else (which you can hear but never see) - the whole thing comes off as a very poor comedy/horror hybrid. That said, the puzzles are OK and the locations interesting enough. If I had paid full prize for this game Id felt screwed, but at a low bargain prize I suppose its (just) worth it.
Reviewed by: Amazon Reviewer Rating: Date Reviewed: 02Feb2009 | | | Really enjoyed this game which was at perfect level for me. Not too long and puzzles were logical and not over complex. This game is perfect for someone who is not too much of an expert or younger teenagers and has the right mix of atmosphere and entertainment value. I would have liked it to be a bit longer but the length for the subject matter was about right and at no point did I get stuck or bored. Very clever game which I loved.
Reviewed by: Amazon Reviewer Rating: Date Reviewed: 11Jan2009 | | | I have just finished this game and was surprised to see negative reviews for it here. So I read them all and I think I can see why some people really enjoyed this game whilst others hated it. I love a game which has logical uncontrived puzzles which you work through methodically. If you like a fast moving game with slick graphics and witty banter this game isnt for you. Personally I dislike games with a lot of talking between the characters as I find most of it annoying/unnecessary/not funny. This game delivers information to you via video, phone, radio and various other means. There is little or no interaction between the characters, it is purely a game where you piece the clues together. I found it to be very atmospheric, creepy (not too scary) and thoroughly enjoyable on a dark winter evening!
Reviewed by: Amazon Reviewer Rating: Date Reviewed: 11Jan2009 | | | i have to agree with all the people who found the game dull. i have been playing point and click games for a couple of years and this is the first one that i cant be bothered to finish. the lack of interaction with other characters makes it very tedious, the atmosphere isnt remotely spooky and it is occasionally unintentionally hilarious. ive been playing for about 4 hours, not sure im going to carry on....
Reviewed by: Amazon Reviewer Rating: Date Reviewed: 30Dec2008 | | | Be afraid...be very afraid! This is the most intelligent, engrossing and interesting game of its kind Ive played as well as managing to be the scariest. As other reviewers have mentioned, this is managed by the old fashioned method of suggestion and whats under the bed or in the wardrobe rather than shlock horror and gore. Having said that, the constant sense that something is going to happen any minute...well,..sometimes it DOES! But ya just never know when see...! ~The puzzles are intriguing and intelligent, very much intertwined with the story line. Reading the researchers materials on such as trees, mushrooms, stone circles etc. is not only interesting but necessary! Never boring, never contrived just for the sake of having a puzzle. Starts off, its night time and youre in your car driving along a long dark, lonely country road in deepest Cornwall, listening to the local radio station. You turn down this lane, pitch black except for your headlights, and the engine cuts... You try a few things (naturally) but you soon find that youre left with one option...leaving the car and walking further up the lane. All the time, getting farther away from the headlights and further in to the silence and pitch darkness..and just the crunch of your own footsteps on the road. It took everything I had to do that walk I can tell you and that atmosphere sets the tone for the whole game. Theres very little let up. Theres been an archealogical dig locally and its disturbed something ancient and powerful and, well, where did everyone go? Absolutely everywhere is deserted...except for YOU! Im still looking for anything to match this adventure. Loved it. Wouldnt want to play it alone though...Enjoy!

I got this game off the back of having completed `The Lost Crown`(made by the same person). And I am highly dissapointed with Barrow Hill. First off its a first person perspective, which i hated, i much prefer a 3rd person view, so i can see my character, and watch them interact with the surroundings. Secondly there were hardly any people to interact with during the whole game, a total of 2(unless you count animals, 3). I prefer to interact with NPCs to gather information, but here its like school work, where you have to read pages & pages of dialogue from books or notes ZZZzzzzz.....The story is dull as dishwater and totaly laugable at points. The voice acting is amateur. The only thing going for it, is the half decent graphics, although the characters look so cheap, it makes me cringe thinking that i paid for this. Each to their own, just not my cup of tea at all, but if it sounds good to you, have a go.
