Plasma TV Accessories Buyers Guide
Although there are a number of different accessories available for Plasma televisions, by far the most important accessory you will have to choose and purchase for your Plasma TV is the mount or stand. Whilst may TVs now come with their own stand, these are often unsuitable for particular rooms or decorative styles and may not offer the storage needed for the other components of your home cinema system.
Wall Mounts and Stands
The stand you purchase will mainly be influenced by who has manufactured the Plasma TV you own or are thinking of purchasing. Where your new Plasma television is to be placed will affect the type of stand you choose, with the other major factors being the weight and size of the plasma television.
Wall Mount
This mounts the Plasma TV flat against the wall. In addition to size and weight factors, you must ensure that the VESA measurements (the distance between the mounting points on the back of the TV) will be compatible with the mount. Most modern mounts offer a range of slots to ensure some flexibility here - but do check. Also ensure that the wall will take the weight. With so many modern homes constructed using plasterboard on frames, you will at the very least need to locate uprights in the frame in order to safely handle what is a very significant weight.
Adjustable Wall Mount
These work in the same way as a normal wall mount, but with the additional feature of an adjustable arm or pivot so that the TV can be viewed from different angles. Maximum weight ratings vary widely, as do the range of supported angles.
Ceiling Mount
A ceiling mount works in much the same way as an adjustable wall mount, but is instead attached to the ceiling. Again, you will need to identify the location of joists and use those as the mounting points to ensure that the mount is safe. Thus some flexibility in the mounting points is vital.
Floor Stand
Many of these Plasma TV accessories have the appearance of a small bookcase. There is space for the plasma television on top with shelves underneath for other items in your entertainment system. Most will include some level of cable management and some may even include surge protected power outlets to assist in simplifying the wiring between the stand and the wall.
Pedestal
These sleek looking Plasma TV accessories are stands with an attachment for the display (remember to check the VESA measurements) and in some cases a fixture so that the Pedestal can be secured to the floor. Do check the stability.
Other Accessories
Plasma TV accessories other than stands are primarily upgraded cables and all-in-one remote controls. All the required cables should be supplied with your plasma TV but signal quality can often be improved by purchasing an upgraded cable which may have better shielding and perhaps gold plated connectors to minimise any interference and signal loss. There are also endless all-in-one remote controls, many of which can be "trained" to reduce the veritable army of remotes adorning your coffee table. Many will come pre-loaded with the control codes for popular TV models which can save you considerable set-up time.
