Plasma TVs Buyers Guide

Plasma technology continues to evolve and lends itself to larger screen sizes in particular. Today's plasma TVs can be freestanding or hung from a wall. Many different models with various specifications and features are available, so it is important that you take your time in choosing the Plasma TV that is right for you.

Screen Size

Any Plasma TV must comfortably fit into your living space and still leave ample room for viewing. It is recommended that for optimal viewing of Plasma televisions you should sit between 1.5 and 3 times the width of the screen away from the TV. Thus for a 42 inch TV, you should be looking to be seated at between just over 5 feet through to around 10 feet away.

Flat Screen

Plasma televisions have completely flat screens, which assist in the trademark wide viewing angles (sometimes up to as much as 170° around the TV), allowing everyone in the room to see a bright and clear picture.

Design

Plasma TVs are typically slim, with the depth of even a 50-inch Plasma television, for example, usually measuring little more than 4 inches. Many will include back lights which can be controlled in creating a "halo" effect around the TV when required. In terms of colour, gloss black is very much the colour of the moment although aluminium and other finishes are also available. This is entirely a matter of personal choice.

Higher Resolution

Most current Plasma TVs offer high definition TV (HDTV). However, there is a difference between full HD Plasma televisions and those that are simply HD ready. True HD requires a Plasma TV to display 1080p resolution whereas an HD ready television displays 720p resolution (although it can handle 1080p signals). Clearly some of the resolution is lost in the translation. If possible, go for a 1080p full HD model to future proof your TV and to get the most from Blu-ray and other full HD sources.

Outstanding Accuracy of Colour

The latest Plasma TVs can display literally billions of different colours, meaning that there is a smooth transition between subtle shades of the same colour, producing an extremely realistic and life-like image.

Other Factors

Whilst the underlying technology of two different Plasma TVs may claim to be comparable, there can be significant differences in picture quality as a result of the manufacturing processes and the circuitry used in managing the image. The same can be said of the light source which will determine the brightness (measured in cd/m2) and will also affect the contrast ratio (look for 10,000:1 or better if possible). Ultimately, you should compare different models side by side and make a selection based upon the quality of the image displayed, together with the availability of suitable inputs to ensure the best possible connectivity with your existing and planned equipment. Here you should be looking for HDMI or HDMI2, together with perhaps Component Video, S-Video, SCART and even RCA analogue video - all depending on the outputs of your DVD player or recorder, satellite system and so forth.
